The real question is what will the taxes be in 3,5 or 10 years. I suspect they will go up quite a bit more.

When you do the full and complete math from home to destination and back for all cost. This fee is insignificant. The BVI did the whole math problem and thus will be just the beginning. The key to BVI revenue growth is the same number or even fewer visitors spending more money per day in the BVI. Sadly that will mean cutting the USVI travelers out of the formula.

Actually at $10 a day more per person from the USVI. $6 BVI based $16 us based. Take that over seven days that's seventy dollars more per week per person. The ferry costs $80 round trip per person plus the $25 departure fee. It is still the same cost or less to charter from the USVI if you factor in all the costs. All they did was wipe out the savings that went into effect before.

When you consider a lot of people have to burn a day or two in a hotel to make the transfers. It is still less expensive to charter in St Thomas when you tally up the entire costs. Airfare , ferry, cabs, provisioning, hotels and lost time all have to be factored in to make a sound decision.

Plus if you spend a few more days around St John, Magen's Bay, Water Island etc where there are no cruising fees then the costs are actually cheaper. Or you can go to the SVI's and spend no money on customs and clear in on the phone.

This tax is short sighted it will help the government coffers in the short run but will have an adverse effect on the economy on many levels. I talked to a friend of mine today that runs one of the largest day trip companies in the USVI's. He said the same thing that most of my other friends in this business have said. With ABI Beach Bar, Water Island, Pizza Pi and the national park in St John. They are encouraging more and more people to stay in USVI waters. They lay out the costs in both time and money to go to the BVI's and a lot of that money is staying on this side of the line.

I'm all for the daytrippers staying in the USVI.

Do they pay a cruising tax? I thought it was for boats that overnight.

Good question. The original announcement specifically referred to "Daytrippers' but the later articles don't. The new rule does include the phrase " a foreign based charter boat is any boat other than a home based charter boat." which could be interpreted to mean day trip boats. That would make the total fee for a day at White Bay $26 including the new "enviromental fee".

I had to laugh at StormJib's asertion that it was part of a grand plan to attract visitors who spend more. There is no plan, long range or otherwise. It is purely a short sighted attempt to raise maybe another $1.2 million annually to help cover years of financial incompentence, malfeasence and outright graft.

Based on the latest dataI can find on BVI tourism spending (2013), While it may provide a minor source government revenue, if the new fees discourage 800 people (0.3% reduction) there will be a net loss in total GDP.

800 people over a years time is ~ 2 charters per week ( 15 people). Oh, the insignificance.

Government gets a few dollars and the locals lose business. Good planning.

Yes they do. Most boats from St Thomas or St John charge $50 a day per person just to cover fees. That will go up.

We just spent $70 per person for a one-way ferry ticket from Virgin Gorda to Red Hook PLUS $20 departure tax. We won't be going back any time soon.
