Costa Concordia Viewed from Island of Giglio
      #1598133 - 07/11/14 04:31 AM (79.24.121.249)

Hello Friends. Sorry I have been absent so long.
We are in Italy, and my son in law, Marc, wanted to see this disaster, so we drove to the Island of Giglio.
The ship is to be towed to Genova within a week, so our timing was great.

First picture! Note the huge dent in the ship, where she fell on herself!

Welcome Back!

Such a tragedy and shame...

And what an engineering feat to right the ship and tow it away.

Lisa

Agreed, such a tragedy. I posted this link in the Afloat forum yesterday. Really spooky footage...

Oh, I have missed you! I will post more pictures shortly, but let me tell you what Adriano, our super sweet taxi driver told us about the tragedy. He was in his home, watching TV, and his friend called him. "Come over right now! There is this horrible tragedy, and I can see it perfectly from my home". He went over there and watched the horrors. Children screaming and crying. People flinging themselves into the water. And, remember it was COLD. The Costa passengers were in the middle of a "GALA", so they were dressed to the nines. They had to get out as fast as they could.
32 people died that night. People slept in a school, and then they left by ferryboat by 8am in the morning. Traumatized.
Adriano said he went several times closeby with relatives looking for friends or relatives. Horrors.
He knew a lot, as he used to work on a cruise ship.
Now, within a week or shortly thereafter, the ship will be towed to Genoa for dismantling and the sale and insurance of parts.
Seems crazy to us.
On another hand, the Island del Giglio has been a major tourist attraction since the fiasco. That has helped their economy. Only good thing.
The island is quite stunning! 3 hours by car to Porto Santo Stefano, and then a 1+ hour ferryboat ride to Giglio.

Thanks for the rest of the pictures. It really does look to be a stunning area! I hope they are able to remove the ship without any further damage to the ecology of the area.

Here is the a Giglio webcam that I check every morning:

Someone on the board had posted link after accident first happened. I enjoyed the photos that Soncijo posted and have read many times that a lot of money has been made on the island through the tragedy and has helped the island and it's residents. I know it will be bitter-sweet when the ship is towed away. The island beauty will no longer be hindered but the source of revenue for some people will be gone.

Thank you so much, Cats2! It is such a gorgeous place, Giglio. People were very kind. Yes, the tourists have brought much money, but think of the cost.
Anyway, I was glad to be able to add something to BVI People Talk! All best to my friends, Joan

It has been changed to tomorrow, but the ship is finally due to be towed away. And yes I was reading that the island has had an influx of money from all the divers, technicians, scientists, etc., who have been working on salvaging the wreck. They will miss the money but I think the island certainly will not miss the very sad Costa Concordia.

It will take a couple of months just to remove all the platforms and equipment they used to get it upright.

I am sure that you are correct with regard to that. I will try to remember to pop in tomorrow to see if there is a live feed from the towing operation. I presume there will be.

Soncijo - I have missed your turtle pictures!

We had the privileged of swimming with a Hawksbill for about 40 minutes last week. They are so beautiful and such gentle creatures! Got some really nice pics.
