Hey thanks!! Have been in Portsmouth/Norfolk Virginia for 2 days, having fun but want to be on the water! Find out today if we can depart tomorrow, pesky weather!!! Glad I built in 3 extra days at the end for what ifs. Any weather experts out there to give me a report?

Does not look good for the next 48 hours. Gale moving up from the south that will generate opposing winds over the stream for the next few days. You do not want to cross the stream with the wind opposing the current. Winds should move south west by late Monday or Tuesday after that system passes. Rest of the week however looks close to perfect. Light southerly winds to cross the stream then NW for a day or so outside to push you south. Could get another cold front by Saturday though.

OK I can see that. If things proceed at the same rate you will hit the stream early evening after the wind moves SW. Stream will still be a bit bumpy but at least not straight up and down. Once outside, the high moving in behind this system should push you southward off the port quarter for a couple of days.

If you have some time because of the late departure, go and say hello to our friends Bill and Rosemary on Crazy Horse. They've done the event before and also sailed around the world in company with Jeannius on another World Cruising Club event.

Good luck with the trip.

I will certainly look for crazy horse in the morning. Have met many nice people during our 4 long days waiting for this storm to pass. I am excited to get this race started at 1130hr. I brought one dry bag of clothing with me and its contents have exploded all over my hotel room so its time to repack! I'll shout out when we arrive in Marsh Harbor on Friday, thanks for all the well wishes!

From the J World Annapolis FB page today...

J World Annapolis' Eurotrash Girl is on the high seas! Here is a pre-emarkation post from one our students:

As you know I am setting sail tomorrow en route Marsh Harbor, Bahamas. I will be will dropped off in Eastport in the morning and we'll leave the docks around lunchtime. We'll work our way down the Chesapeake to meet the other ARC Caribbean/Bahama participants in Portsmouth Virginia on Thursday. FYI, ARC Rallies are technically a race, no motors just wind power! (actually we are allowed to run our diesel twice a day to charge our batteries to power our electronics) ARC's are organized all over the world allowing sailors to travel great distances in groups, "safety in numbers". The ARC Caribbean 1500 boats are sailing all the way to Tortola BVI (1500 miles) and my group will sail approximately 200 miles offshore through the Gulf Stream then head south to the Bahamas, about 750 miles total, both ARC groups leave Portsmouth at the same time....should be a cool sight! The offshore blue water portion of the trip should take just under 5 days to complete.

We will have 8 crew on our J120 monohull, 40 foot performance racer/cruiser. 2 watch Captains are J World Instructors, Jeff is a Director at J World and has made this trip and other crossings dozens of times and Tony just retired as a USN Chief Navigator on an aircraft carrier and he teaches sailing to the midshipmen at the Naval Academy. We will split the crew into 2 watch groups responsible for 6 hour watches during daylight and 4 hour watches at night. The 4 person teams will rotate their positions during their watches, steering, navigation, sail trim, making coffee and preparing snacks! The crew that is not on deck will be down below eating or sleeping in their bunk. There are 4 bunks midship, 2 stacked portside and 2 starboard and we'll clip ourselves in with webbing to keep from rolling out....sounds glamorous aye! Food? we are very fortunate that one of the crew had access to a chef and he has prepared real gourmet meals vacuum sealed for 4 people, simply put bags in boiling water! Here's a couple items from his menu... Cuban braised pork shoulder with saffron rice and refried beans, rigatoni w/ sausage peppers and onions, vodka sauce, roasted red pepper soup......geeesh! I was expecting dehydrated camping food heheeeee!

We are supposed to leave Portsmouth on Saturday, but there is a weather front moving in that is predicted to bring 17-24 foot seas and gale force winds off of Hatteras. The ARC committee will not let anyone start in that kind of weather, I am thankful for that!

Hope you keep an eye on our progress and I'll give a shout out along the way!
XOXO
Rick

About Monday it looks like a fairly strong high pressure will follow the next cold front returning the winds to the north. Bad mojo for crossing the stream. Be careful out there.
Been there done that.

I am now hopping from plane to plane on my way home. A report will be written, but just wanted to say hey! Quite the adventure including everything from tropical storm conditions to illness and a medical emergency 200 miles off shore to enjoying gourmet food during the passage to catching fish, flying kites, repairing and jerry rigging things and of course all the nice people i was fortunate to meet.....FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!

Wow, looking forward to a report, get well!
I did a lot of offshore racing aboard BlewBayou, a J 120, great boats and lots of fun! We exploded 2 kites in one night on our way to Ensenada!

I actually started writing today! It took me several days to get my internal clock reset from the demanding watch schedule we were on. We had an 8a-2p, 2p-8p, 8p-midnight, midnight-4a and 4a-8a rotations for 2 days on the Chesapeake and then 5 days at sea. Not to mention the Portsmouth Va/Bahama partying! Hope to post first report in a couple of days. Here's a teaser!

Ok, one more for sunset fans.....
