USA to have full diplomatic relations with Cuba
      #1620143 - 12/17/14 01:17 PM (75.133.117.91)

It has been announced that Cuba and the USA will have full diplomatic relations. I think this will be a game changer for the Caribbean for home ownership and values as well as tourism. This means the BVI will have to compete with Cuba which will be very difficult. C

It is progress but lifting the embargo will require congressional approval which is not likely to come for the next two years.

This has been a bad policy for years, but we will screw Cuba once again once travel is allowed. Cuba will be the next cruise ship destination and does not have the infrastructure for thousands of people to travel there every day.

The airlines are already ready, American has flown from Miami and Continental from Houston for years. "daily charter flights".

There are bareboat charter bases already on the South coast, but provisioning is very difficult.

Having spent time in Cuba, it is a great country with a lot of offer.

Ahh, so that is why my husband just shouted down the hall "we are going to Cuba soon!" (we work together)

My German relatives love Cuba and my mother has friends that have lived and worked there and they rave about it.

I think this is great news and a long time coming..and I really dont think this will affect real BVI Tourism and if it diverts some cruise ships away from our beloved islands I say "Hooray"...maybe it will bring back those who remember "nature's little secrets"..

Cuba will be the new kid on the block for awhile then things will straighten themselves out.
The downfall for the BVI in my opinion will be the destruction of the East end (Trellis Bay), Cooper,Peter island and Marina Cay with the noise from the jets making their approach to land at the new airport

Probably won't be making any plans to go there in the next couple years, but it will certainly impact our planned Caribbean sailing sabbatical/circumnavigation - in a good way.

Here is what I read, so not much will change yet:

“We cannot completely lift the travel ban" without Congress, one official said on a conference call organized by the White House. "We are authorizing as much travel as we possibly can within the constraints of the legislation.”

In practice, that will mean granting travel licenses to all travelers in categories that Congress has already designated as permitted to go to Cuba. Those include: family visits, official U.S. government travel, journalism, professional research or meetings, educational exchanges, religious activities, public performances (including sporting events), and humanitarian work.

OK, so looks like I will have to wait a while longer to go to Cuba.

Gonna' be a game changer....might take a bit, but in 5 years the whole deal as far as market share for Caribbean basin travelers will change.

At this point it is pretty much just a symbolic gesture. We will have an embassy there. They will have an embassy here. The real changes will require Congress to act, and they haven't exactly been giving Obama his way lately. Don't expect anything meaningful to happen until after the 2016 elections at least.

Still, as symbolic gestures go, this is a good one. Should have been done years ago, but better late than never.

So long as you could adequately provision the boat, that seems a great way to go, until the tourist infrastructure is in place. Kneafsey said that provisioning might be a problem though.

Problem is, as I understand it, there are not enough hotel rooms, by far, or restaurants or cabs, etc., to handle any big influx of Americans..

For years many people have been opening their homes. But I think for most American travelers that isn't the way to go. Hotel National in Havana is still very nice and has always been expensive.

The other issue with Bareboating is there isn't many places to go. Marinas are very limited and not a lot of anchorages, on the South Coast the Bay of Pigs is off limits which makes many passages long.

Getting around is pretty easy there are tourist buses that go everywhere. Plus many people will to drive you in an "illegal taxi", as they need money. There are also decent airports as many have been setup for the direct Canadian and Europe flights.

Strange enough if you love antiques I would go shopping there are many old homes with well maintained furnishings. They would probably trade out for some water heaters and toilet seats.

Former President Bill Clinton has been rumored to have quoted, when asked about Cuba, "I did NOT have relations with that country!". Then he lit a cigar

You would be surprised the number of resorts in Cuba. Varedero, Cayo Coco ,Santa Lucia , my favourite Guardalavaca and more. They range from basic to 5 star. The beaches are beautiful and its the people that keep bringing you back.

With it soon being open for American tourism the prices will go up and more resorts will be built. An example of prices , I can go to Cuba for a week to an AI for the price of my airfare alone to Tortola.

Be gentle with them ...they are proud people.

Hotels will be built when they open Cuba to the U.S. and within two years the landscape will change.
The good part is Cuba's the largest Caribbean island with diverse topography.
