Has anyone gone to the beach here. Is it better then Light House beach with the thousands of spectators walking by. This is near Old Inlet I can spend the night on my boat

It's a beautiful beach that has far less the amount of foot traffic that Lighthouse has due to it's remote location. To get there you can take the boardwalk through the dunes or walk west on the beach 1 mile past the pavilion.
30 years ago this beach had about 2 thousand people on a Sat or Sun but once Lighthouse went CO the crowd moved there.

If you don't like crowds, this is a great beach.
As far as sleeping on the boat, I am not sure if there are any places nearby, within walking distance. But you may go at it from the other end. There is a long stretch of the beach, several miles long, between Watch Hill and Smith Point that is nearly deserted. Watch Hill has a marina.
The reason this stretch of the beach is deserted is because there is no access. There is an access by car to Smith Point, then, going West, no access until Watch Hill which has access only by ferry or private boats.
On Fire Island (other than Lighthouse beach which is crowded), any beach that is far enough from crowds is, or can be a nude beach. Smith Point is officially recognized as such, but if you walk East of Watch Hill, you can do as you please. There is another (official) nude beach in Davis Park (just west of Watch Hill), but there are usually few nude people and quite a lot of non-nude people walking by...

I'm curious what you mean by "official". It's against Federal law for the NPS to make any official designation of any part of a National Park or Seashore as clothing-optional.

Smith Point Park is a Suffolk County Park... I can't say about "official" nude policy... I can't find anything saying Smith Point has a nude beach or not... online... but it is not part of the NPS... http://www.nps.gov/fiis/planyourvisit/smith-point-county-park.htm http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/Home/departments/parks/Smith%20Point%20County%20Park.aspx

I don't want to get into the fine points of law, but there is a sign specifying where C/O section begins. The border is observed by both beach goers and the park rangers.
That's official enough for me.

Actually, that's what we mean by unofficial. The sign is certainly put up by naturist groups, not the park service and there's case law that says that the classic "Beyond this point, you may encounter nude sunbathers" does not designate a beach as clothing-optional (but a sign on the other side, saying "clothing must be worn beyond this point" does, which is why that part of the sign is likely not present there.

Brian,
The nude beach is West of Smith Point Suffolk County Park on the Fire Island National Seashore, which is controlled by the NPS. We use the county park's parking lot the same as we use field 5 on Robert Moses State Beach to get access to the CO beach.
