CO - Sun Tan Lotion
      #1355901 - 11/21/11 08:08 AM (198.80.151.94)

My wife and I are new to CO, what are the recommendations for sun tan lotion for those areas? Don't want to get burned...

Apply liberally or fry.

Nothing special, just follow sunscreen manufacturers recommendations. Be sure to reapply based on the time requirements of the sunscreen, especially important in areas that don't often get exposed to sunlight.

Use your usual. But test it out first before your vacation, just in case there is a reaction.

A few weeks before your trip, start going to a tanning salon and get some exposure on those white bits. For a 20 minute bed start at around 6 minutes. Increase no more than 1 minute each session. Tan 2 or 3 times per week. It could save your butt.

Pre tan and get an SPF 8 waterproof lotion, like No-ad or Caribbean Breeze (the latter sold at the the small shop at the end of Club Orient's beach). If you have a good base, you shouldn't have to apply more than twice a day. Beware the spray-on stuff...it runs right off when you sweat or swim.

A note from our dermatologist- It is not called sun tan lotion. The correct term is sun block, and it is supposed to save your butt from getting skin cancer. SPF 30 minimum and reapply every two hours.

SPF 8? You would need quite a base tan...everywhere....not to burn with SPF 8. Waterproof 15 at the "bare" minimum.

I agree with the advice to pre-tan. My wife and I usually share a 6 session purchase at a local tanning salon. I just apply some lotion to my bald head and face while using the tanning booth. Provides a nice base coat before Club O!!

I would use the most protective sunscreen you can. I went through the whole skin cancer deal this year and have the big scar to prove it. I am lucky and beat the cancer, so I still have the ability to go to the island. Others do not. I use a sunblock 50 or more and still get a lot of color while on the island. No tan is worth your life.

We apply spf 30 about 30 minutes before we leave for the beach to allow time to absorb. Then we re-apply twice while on the beach. We have never burned and always have a dark tan.

My wife and I pre-tan for a while before leaving for SXM. I don't burn as easily as her so my SPF numbers are lower, but it is better to err using higher numbers than lower. I am lacking hair upstairs so I bring a baseball cap that doesn't have the screen in the back if I am out for a long time. When on the Peggy and Paul trip I used SPF 30 on my head and shoulders and 4 on the rest of me. Since we have an all over tan we don't have white parts. Remember that the Caribbean sun is hotter than in the Northeast. That is why they have umbrellas on the beaches. "Those areas" if you pre-tan will tan the same as the rest of you.

I never burn with #8. It all depends on your skin type. And we do get quite a base. I should know better than to post anything here. To many people with paddles at the ready.

Remember; a burn is an injury, but not the only sign of too much sun. You can get skin cancer without a burn. A tan helps protect you against a burn, but doesn't really provide good protection against the damaging rays. Sure, a nice tan is aesthetically pleasing, but it isn't worth your life! Use a good sun block!

My recommendation: Get the strongest SPF you can. I did the tanning booth thing for 4-5 weeks before departure, and on Day 1 last June spent a couple of hours in the water (where the feeling of the heat is nullified) just BSing with many people and my No-AD SPF 30 washed away, and I burned my shoulders up on day 1... so bad, that it really inconvenienced the rest of my days for that stay!

SPF 30 every 30 minutes to re-apply in the areas that are new to sun exposure especially during peak sun hours 10AM to 2PM. welcome to the club!

Thanks for the info everyone. This is our third trip and we usually use spf 30+ for everyday use. This year we are traveling alone, just the wife and I and the sun don't shine areas are a concern for us. I think I will start using the tanning beds this week, and see if I can get a base before the trip. Does everyone use the same sunscreen everywhere or do you use special sun screen for the sensitive areas?
Thanks again...

We use the same, but some folks have noted in the past some discomfort when using sunscreen on the more sensitive areas. That's why I suggested trying it out before you leave so you can experiment if you have an issue.

SPF 70 for us for face and nether regions. At least SPF 30 for everywhere else.

Considering all the concern about skin cancers in various posts here I'm surprised to see so many recommendations for tanning beds.

I never walk out the door without 70+ on my face & hands (though from what I understand, anything over 30 is about the same) but the key to success with sunscreen is reapplication... generously & often. New US gov't requirements will only allow manufacturers to show 40 minutes of protection for sunscreen products, so for complete protection you'll need to be diligent.

When we're in the island sun, I use very high SPF and try to apply frequently but I always tan. You won't block ALL the sun, so IMO it's safer to apply sunblock frequently, inevitably tan through it a little, & avoid tanning beds.

If I can't be a good example, I'll just have to be a horrible warning.

I agree with not using tanning beds. You can get cancer from those just as you can from the sun.

we have always used the tanning beds about a month before we arrive...
(I hate going in the tanning beds... so I only use them if we are going to SXM, and only for a month)...
Get that base tan... never a problem...
The one year I didn't get a chance to use one... I got a terrible burn...
I used sunscreen (SPF 40) liberally the whole trip, but one day, I missed a rather large patch under my arms... OUCH!!!
It only took an hour or two for the burn to set in that morning...
I was in misery for two days...

That would not have happened if I had pre-tanned...
after pre-tanning, I only need SPF15, and I never burn...

My wife and I use once-a-day SPF20 lotion (Ultrasun) in the Caribbean, and it works well. The beauty of it is that it's waterproof, non-greasy and is unfragranced. You have to apply it very carefully, to make sure every little bit of skin is coated, and then allow it 20-30 minutes to soak in before going out in the sun. With that simple preparation, you're then set for a whole day's fun in the sun.

I pre-tan for a full month before I go to SXM. When on SXM I start using 70 sun block on these very sensitive places and 45 on the rest of the body. By the time I leave I'm down to a 6 or 8. Start out being sun smart, if you burn it will ruin your vacation and increase the risk of skin cancer.

We only use Neutrogena cream. The cream if applied 30 minutes before hitting the sun will last a long time even in the water.

I am not one to lay in the sun. I stay in the shade when I can and I wear a big hat to protect my face. I do not want to go through the treatment for skin cancer again. some people who went through treatment the same time as myself did not make it. My kids and wife are more important to me than getting a tan.

I would rather my wife go on vacation with me instead of her going to my funeral.

Just because you're on a beach or in the sun doesn't mean you're there to "sunbathe" per se. There's swimming, snorkeling, socializing, volleyball, frisbee, sandcastles... or in our case, sailing. Very hard to stay OUT of the sun doing anything in the islands, but that doesn't mean you have to stay away, you just have to be smart about it!

Per the Mayo clinic, pre-tanning may not be helping all that much;

Burning is what damages the skin and anything you can do to keep from burning is a good thing. It is silly to think that you can stay out of the sun all of the time - so whatever you can do to minimize the effects of the sun is a good thing. JMHO

Sometimes it depends on where you are sun tanning. Up here in the northeast, my wife and I can get by with SPF 15 with no problem. However, if we are in the Caribbean, such as St. Martin, where the sun is more intense and direct, we usually start out with a base tan at a tanning solon for a few weeks, and then go to SPF 30 for the first 2-3 days there. Then we are comfortable with a 15 or an 8. It also depends on how many hours in the sun your are expecting to be in. To each his/her own. However, whatever your dermatologist recommends is probably sound advice.

Friends of ours once told us an interesting set of rules the follow: Cheap suntan lotion for everywhere but the fun parts, and Bullfrog sunscreen for where you NEVER want to get burned.

Bullfrog is a spray on, expensive sunscreen, but once it is on it is VERY hard to remove (lots of soap and water needed).

Beside sun block, the easiest way to reduce UV exposure is to avoid being in the sun between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Standard Time, or between noon and 2 p.m. Daylight Saving Time. On St. Martin, there is only Standard Time, so it's easy just to remember to avoid the same span of time before and after 12:00 noon. It might be a good time to shop or read or try a bar or restaurant.
