Very desolate and isolated over there. Small beach with old driftwood around as I recall. Nobody there to help you if you do go out and swim. I would avoid going in the surf there. Looks very treacherous
It's a 15 minute walk over the hill. You just have to watch your footing along the path. I've been swimming the waters off that beach for years with no issues. There is a nice area to the far left (North side) of the beach as you descend down the path for swimming. It has a sandy bottom as opposed to the rocky areas along the rest of the beach.
It is a short 5-10 minute walk. There are a few paths through the vegetation. Just walk straight away from the beach area. If you go early you may be the only ones there. It is not that far, but few people venture that way.

Yes. It is on the north shore of the island. See this Maps.Google.com Satellite View of the island: Pinel Island satellite view You can see that the north shore beach is on the north shore (duh...), and the "back side of the island" beach is on the east shore and directly opposite the ferry landing and easiest of the "non-commercial beaches" to reach. The north shore beach requires just a little more of a hike over a low hill, and it's quieter. Give yourself 7 minutes for the "hike".
That satellite view was great. They both look like large beaches which they are not. Neither of the beaches is great for swimming. There is a current at the North Shore beach and a lot of rocks in the water at the closer beach. Snorkeling is a little better, but not much.
