Check out this link which shows the before and after of Sandy. The box on the lower left is the control and you can drag it over to Fire Island or anywhere along the shoreline.

Heard that the bridge and parking lot at Smith's Point are now open. Hope to get there and see how the beach and boardwalk are, but don't know when that will be. If anyone gets there, please let us know.

I believe the outer beach is still closed to vehicle traffic. Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to reach it.

I don't think we will make it there soon. If it was summer right now, we'd probably be there today, but in summer we don't rake leaves or decorate for Christmas and other stuff this time of year. Maybe you let us know?

I can honestly say it probably won't be us. AS far as I know, there is a decent amount of beach left. IN most places the dunes are gone, and if that's the case, don't know what's left of the stairs and boardwalk. Can always walk the long beach way. I'm thinking the grocer guy will be the first to report.

Talked to someone last night and saw pictures FINS is closed, so you can't walk west. They're still clearing the sand from the parking lot and the tunnels. Sand was all the way to the bay side of the lot. The deer have nothing to eat, as all the growth was washed over. People were feeding them. Saw some pictures of all the sand. THey're rebuilding the dunes there, but don't know what FINS are going to do. They're big on letting mother nature just do her thing. I guess we'll find out.

My trip report from 11/25/2012 Smith Point.
As we drove into the parking lot the first thing you notice is all the deer coming over to the car looking for food.
Very sad all the grass and brush washed away.
the walkways to Smith point was full of sand and a very large pile of sand in the parking lot in front of the walk ways that wash through.
as you get to the Wilderness Visitor Center (located adjacent west to Smith Point County Park,)
You see the real damage Sandy did the .The Surrounding and buffered by high dunes and the boardwalk nature trail that ran behind the dunes for about ˝ mile from the Wilderness Visitor Center to the ocean beach; and the dune crossing boardwalk are all gone!!!
it looks like a flat desert you can see the Smith Point Bridge from the ocean shore.
As we walked down to Old Inlet to see the new Inlet you can see 95% of the high dunes are gone and you notice the width of the beach at least 75 yards wide.
The dock at Old Inlet was mostly gone and the ranger i spoke to said they were still looking for the toilet at Old Inlet it has not been found yet. The breach is about 100 feet wide.

Talked to a guy who went duck hunting down by the breach last week. He said it looked they had received material to rebuild the nature boardwalk. Looks like we're in for next summer.

Re-building the boardwalk is good news. We'll be there next summer. Any talk about rebuilding the dunes and getting rid of the squitas?. Wouldn't it be nice to re-build the boardwalks down to our favorite part?

Hey Joe, remember the national seashore people are big on mother nature. I know the county is rebuilding the dunes by the pavillion. AS to the fins section, who knows. Thankfully the breach is after the good spot. As for lunch, Grocer Man, steak and lobster? For that, we'll take Thursday off from work.

On another forum, there's a report that the National Park Service are going to be enforcing anti-nudity laws at Fire Island. Apparently, the email detailing this is as follows:-

United States Department of the Interior
NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
Fire Island National Seashore
120 Laurel Street
Patchogue, NY 11772

February 5, 2013

To Whom it May Concern:

Effective immediately, state nudity laws will be enforced at Fire Island National Seashore. While state laws apply throughout the Seashore, the park will focus its public education and enforcement efforts of the existing New York State law at the following federally-owned areas:

- Lighthouse beach, from the western boundary of the park to the western boundary of Kismet.
- The Sailors Haven tract, from Point O' Woods to Cherry Grove.
- One half mile on either side of the Barrett Beach lifeguard stand.
- One mile on either side of the Watch Hill lifeguard stand.
- From the Wilderness Visitor Center to the breach at Old Inlet

Public nudity has been prohibited in the State of New York since 1984 under New York State Penal Code 245.01. Fire Island National Seashore shares concurrent jurisdiction with the State of New York, which means that state laws can be enforced on federal lands by federal, state, and local law enforcement officers. Although the National Park Service (NPS) is focusing its enforcement on the identified areas, the law still applies park-wide, and may be enforced throughout the park. NPS policies favor consistent enforcement of state laws on federal lands, and disfavor the designation of clothing optional areas. Public nudity on Fire Island has resulted in conflicts of use, despite past park management efforts to accommodate clothing optional recreation. On Lighthouse beach in particular, the dense visitation invited by the previously-designated “clothing optional beach” presented not only a visitor use conflict, but created a public safety hazard due to the lack of adequate facilities for trash and human waste, in addition to the heavy recreation on a non-lifeguarded beach. Additionally, Hurricane Sandy leveled the dunes in this area, which increases the visibility of the beach from other public use areas. The sandy over-wash areas left by the storm created added habitat for sensitive species in the area. Finally, park employees have observed an increase in criminal activity in the designated clothing-optional areas, but have been unable to appropriately manage this activity despite significant attempts at education and enforcement.

Violation of this law is a class B federal misdemeanor, and can result in fines of up to $5,000 and up to six months imprisonment.

Fire Island National Seashore management recognizes that visitors have come to Fire Island to sunbathe in the nude for many years, and that many responsible and respectful users of this beach have provided support to the park through volunteer efforts over the years. Fire Island National Seashore management is focusing its enforcement only on those areas in which visitor use conflicts are likely—specifically, those areas that are heavily visited by members of the public who are generally not attuned to nude recreation. On all Seashore lands, however, other regulations such as disorderly conduct, creating an offensive condition, public intoxication, and drug and alcohol laws will be strictly enforced. Use and compliance on all park beaches will be monitored throughout the summer, with additional measures being taken as necessary. Should concentrations of nudity and/or lewd and lascivious behaviors increase in other areas of the park and cause similar conflicts with other visitors and/or protected natural resources, then the park may expand its enforcement efforts to other areas.

Questions about these changes should be directed to Chief Ranger Lena Koschmann
at 631-687-4757 or lena_koschmann@nps.gov.

Sincerely,

/s/ Lena Koschmann
Chief Ranger, Fire Island National Seashore

O: (631) 687-4757

I read with great dismay the expanded anti-nudity law for Fire Island and points outlined. There will still be many areas available but with a little longer walk. Most areas outlined were in heavy traffic areas near homes and ferry terminals. It will still be Hard to enforce in many other half mile out areas. Lighthouse I believe was primarily targeted by this law due to overuse damage crowd control. There are folks who have been going here for over 40 yrs to FINS. They have rights and it helps Long Islands economy. People come from New England NJ NYC and even Pennylv. A few bad selfish individuals can ruin it for the many it was a fragile prior agreement with the NPS. Thankful we still have beachesa left on Fire Is. after the ravages of Sandy. Some areas like Lighthouse will take years to come back. Very sad for all beachlovers and vacationers.

NO this is not Smith Point...
Smith Point is a Suffolk county Park you can not go nude there you will by ticketed.
This is the Federal beach National Parks service and Fire Island National Seashore (FINS west of Smith Point) the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness .

NAC is already involved. We just have to wait for developments to occur. Right now NAC does not feel is the right time for letter writing. They will be issuing a NAC alert when appropriate.

Thanks for your inquiry.

Yes, you're correct. Smith's Point is the county park and the wilderness center and beyond is a federal area, but we always just called it all Smith's Point. Now I guess it's all called Textile beach. Do you grill with clothes on? I'm surprised that Joe Cool hasn't weighed in on this subject. I hope he didn't slit his wrists after hearing the bad news.

Clothing Optional Recreation

From Boesser-Koschmann, Lena
To thegreengrocer

Hello,

I am writing in response to the question you posted on our website recently. We will be focusing our enforcement efforts with regards to state nudity laws only on the east side of the breach, from the breach to the Wilderness Visitor Center. We will not be proactively enforcing this law west of the breach, as long as you are at least one mile from Watch Hill. We will be monitoring all areas, however, for increased use and potential visitor use conflicts such as we have had on Lighthouse Beach in the past.

I hope this answers your question. Please contact me if you have any additional questions.

Thank you,

AANR response to me... [Re: thegreengrocer]
      #1480800 - 02/15/13 09:23 PM (68.196.208.21)

Hi,

I want to let you know that we are working on it, both at the National level and the AANR-East level. Our government affairs team is in the process of determining our options and working towards to assist in this dilemma.
What is most important right now is to let us do our work on the GAT level and then as soon as we are ready we will rally the troops so to speak. If you have people that you know that would be willing to advocate, please inform them that we will contact them as soon as we are ready.
I know how frustrating it is to have to wait for action, but if you know the government we must use caution and approach the National Parks service diplomatically to make any progress. Please stay in contact with me and I will continue to keep you informed. You may also contact Director Tom Brown of our Government Affairs Team at directortbrown@aanr-east.com
Thank you for contacting AANR-East and be assured that we are working on this issue.
Gloria Waryas
Director AANR-East

Where is the "breach"?
When she says you need to be at least a mile from Watch Hill is that the area just east of Davis Park?

Thanks

Yes, Watch Hill is about a half mile East of Davis Park. You can take a ferry there , but I believe the hours are a little shorter than D.P. Then hike for a mile, with a mile back before the last ferry. Ferries run later from D.P. so you can add another half mile. Better to hitch a ride on the grocer man's boat. Ferry ain't cheap either. D.P. was 17 each round trip last year.

That was me. I didn't log in. The breach is way east of Watch Hill, right before the nude section at Smith's Point. For what it's worth, there is a nice restaurant at Watch Hill marina. The bottom line is by the time you park board, ride across, disembark, and hike a mile it must be about 90 minutes. Hour and a half commute to me, isn't worth it. If you do D.P. you can walk that half mile on the boardwalk, which would be faster, if you're dragging a cart. It's still a mile and a half if you want to stay later or get there earlier.

The new inlet is right at the Old Inlet dock.
That is in the center of the Otis Pike Fire Island Wilderness center.
The dock had been completely ruin by Sandy
We will need to just pull up to the beach with the boat no hike require

The article does not say which "four" beaches the law willl be enforced at. Let's chalk up another one of life's enjoyable pleasures destroyed due to the stupidity of certian people confusing naturism with sexual behavior. Let's hope the Travasuns people can work something out with the rangers. Although it doesn't look too promising. S#@*!

I agree, not too promising. The Travarsuns and Save Lighthouse Beach had their chance to work things out with the NPS. These groups were told that last season was probationary, one last chance to clean up their act or else. The "Ambassador" program they instituted was either non existent or ineffective as the sexual shenanigans continued.
The Naturist Action Committee has obtained legal counsel and will meet with the Dept of the Interior to discuss the clothing option rights to federal lands. This is a slight glimmer of hope and if they're successful the location of the c/o beach IMO will be moved to a more remote area of Fire Island and not be re-established near the Lighthouse.

Great. The sexual shenanigan crowd coming to the more remote areas. My gut feeling is that this is final. The FINS people really don't do anything they don't want to. They'll listen, but in the end, their way. I know people on the seashore advisory board, and they have told me that in the past. Another reason that they like the breach is now no beach vehicle traffic from the east. Piping plover are more important. I hope I'm wrong but I just don't see it.

From my observations over the years during my summer visits some of the sex acts were thinly veiled behind the windscreens but there were several exhibitionists that didn't care who saw them. They knew there would be repercussions for their actions but again, they didn't care. If they migrate to Gunnisons they'll be told in no uncertain terms to clean up their act or they'll be reported and arrested. Unlike Lighthouse Beach, Gunnisons has lifeguards, is actively patrolled by the rangers and has an undercover surveillance unit.

Saw a brief article in today's Daily News. The Army Corps of Engineers is going to re-build the beaches at Fire Island and cover all of the costs. Maybe FINS will reconsider Lighthouse for nude use. Any news from AANR or the Naturist Society about this?

I have not heard any updates yet. I do hope that the FINS/NPS reconsider their decision but I'm afraid they will use the public safety issue to justify their actions.

As I've said before, the FINS people don't listen to any one. The breach is twice as big now, and peoples homes along the south shore are flooding like never before. They don't listen to the county executive or Senator Schumer, so what are the odds that they will listen to the naturist society?

The FINS will have a major say in the outcome but the decision will be made in Washington DC at the Dept of Interior in conjunction with the National Park Service, whom the FINS report to.
In reality I do not think the decision will be overturned but I am hoping it will be. The FINS have a strong argument about not having the resources to maintain public safety for three thousand people in that area of the beach. At best they make allow clothing optional at a remote area west of the breach, where you will need to take a ferry and embark on a long walk to reach it. That will discourage the majority of the nudist from making the trek IMO.

Regardless to the effect it has on beach goers...
I think they should leave the breach just as it is now...
