I don't think there are any c/o beaches, not any more. A long time ago, I tihnk there used to be an unofficial nude beach by the lighthouse and there used to be a hotel with a semi private island where one could go nude--don't know what the current name of that hotel is--I think it used to be the Sonesta, but no idea of current name. I think the nude beach is no more there though. It's been a few years since we've been there but the Best Western Manchebo Beach USED to have a TOPLESS beach, but I think it has been bought out, although I am not sure. You might check there, as they used to have a large European clientele that stayed there amd it used to have a large topless clientele.

From Francis Jacobs, the PR Coordinator of the Aruba Tourism Authority,
"I would like to explain a little bit about your concern. Topless in Aruba is not illegal, there is no law against it, but it's not permitted on public beaches. We have two private beaches where they accept to do so, which are The Renaissance island & De Palm island. Manchebo Beach Resort deals a lot with European & they have a separated area where European go Topless, but they are not allowed to walk on the beach topless. Thank you so much for your interest on the island Aruba, & hope to see you soon."

Gee Brian, kind of sounds like you used the internet to come to the same information that I posted, from my own knowledge.

"topless is not illegaal but it is not permitted on public beaches" Not sure what that means.

I am quite surpresed as Aruba is Dutch and topless sunbathing is quite common and accepted in Holland.

Dutch ST Maarten, Saba and Statia, none of them are particularly topless friendly, although Dutch St. Maarten grudgingly allows topless many places because of French ST. Martin being located on the same island. But Dutch territories in the Caribbean in general are just not as topless friendly as French Caribbean islands or Holland, for that matter.

Remember too that Aruba (and Curacao, for that matter) are independent entities within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. They coordinate with Amsterdam in matters of "foreign policy" but they are not the same now as Saba, St Eustasis (spelling?) and Bonaire. As of 10 October 2010 ("10-10-10") these islands are "communities" in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This means that Amsterdam is more responsible for them financially and there is some harmonization of laws. Whether or not that will change the approach to nudity/nudism remains to be seen. In my experience, it's the local population that is more conservative; the Dutch from Holland have the same attitudes as their countrymen back home.

I'm not sure how all of the government responsibilities work out, but yes, you are absolutely correct, it is the attitude of the local population which is against nudity and toplessness, not the Dutch from Holland.

I agree it's a stretch, but there is a possibility that the harmonization process will result in a more lenient attitude towards nudity, as there is in Holland. I had heard from the locals that such harmonization was taking place in other areas of life. It's the old story: he who pays the piper gets to pick the tune.
