Hi everyone, wife wants to rent a little hut over the water like you see in some commercials. Does anyone have any idea where these exist without having to travel around the world. We live in NC. If the place was clothing optional that would be a bonus.

Check out Petit Byahaut, not huts over the water, but a pretty cool, out-of-the-way, secluded beach, private place in St. Vincent http://outahere.com/petitbyahaut/resort/resort.html

Most of the glamorous pics you see in commercials are found in the South Pacific, although as mentioned above, they do exist in the Caribbean.

Ramon's is a very nice resort right in the town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye; it's cabanas are not over water. San Pedro is a tiny town with sand (unpaved) streets, and a great place to vacation.
From your original post, I thought you meant built out in the water - Anthony's Key Resort in Roatan, Honduras, has some of those. Also, most resorts in French Polynesia do too but they are very, very, very pricey!

When we were in Belize we went for three days to "Little Water Caye" and the "hut" we had was over the water.. I must warn you though its beautiful its more natural than luxury.. THey are very simple little "cabins" not fancy at all.no air conditioning.. . the beauty of the place is the fact that it is so remote (45 min boat ride from the mainland) and only 4 cabins on the island. Reasonalbly priced.. the food is whatever they decide to cook that day.. nothing exotic..we even ate leftovers from dinner one day for lunch.. But the snorkeling is amazing.. so untouched.. its nice for a few days.. I would not stay there for more than that as there is really nothing to do but swim and snorkel as you can walk the island in 15 mins... fun though little island in the middle of nowhere and really beautiful

Teddie, thanks for the info. It seems most have said the same thing as you. The huts are very nice but not much else to do. This is something my wife wants and although I usually do all the fact finding I will and insist she read all these replies. I think your right that it would be fun for a couple of days but then probably drive me crazy wanting something to do. I like socializing myself.

We stayed right next to Ramon's last May and met people who were staying there - they hated it and ended up getting a condo next door where we were staying. I would highly recommend The Palms - they are beautiful condos right on the beach, large balconies with lounge chairs and hammocks, full size apt condos. If interested go to www.belizepalms.com. We will definitely go back!

The Soffetel (sp?) Resorts in Tahiti, on all the islands have the huts. On Moorea there were some other resorts that had them as well.

I agree with Nancyo. Ramon's had that "sprink break" sort of feel. We did not stay there but as we walked to town we saw all the partying. They are huts but are definetly not over the water. Cheers irina

I just saw that Anthony's Cay resort, in the Bay Islands of Honduras (Roatan, I believe) appears to have over-water huts. Check out the latest issue of Islands magazine.

Thinking about going to Belize. Checked out the website for the palms you posted. Looks nice. Couple of questions - Maybe going in Feb 06 - are there alot of bugs or mosquitos, did you see alot of lizards or snakes, did you snorkel (that is why we would go) how is the beach, food, rooms - thanks for any info.

We were there in May - bugs did not bother us - but take some spray just to be safe. Lizards - you're in the islands - what more can I say? They don't bother you though. We snorkeled everyday, several times a day - right off the beach in front of Ramon's or off of the dock there. Also, went rented a boat one day (Bicho's) and did lots of snorkeling and fishing. Great fun. Let me know if you need any other info. We would love to go back, but there are just soooo many places to see. Young Island, St. Vincent is next in October.

Bermuda - 9 Beaches - http://www.9beaches.com/accommodations/ BVI - Long Bay (not quite over the water but right at the water's edge) - http://www.longbay.com/accommodations.htm

After reading the bit about Little Water Caye in Belize, thought it might be an interesting place to spend a few days. But when I looked for them on the internet I read that the resort was completely destroyed in a hurricane and has not been rebuilt. Sad. KathyH

St. George's Caye Lodge in Belize has a number of overwater cabanas. Check it out here: St. George's Caye Lodge. I passed through here while sailing in Belize a couple of years ago, and the hosts are lovely people who run an attractive (albeit rustic) operation. Be warned, however -- this is a TINY caye with not much to it. It's really geared towards divers.

We just stayed at Ramon's and it was AMAZING! We had a wonderful time. DO NOT go to Captain Morgan's on the same island though - they had horrible food and horrible service!

I actually have nothing of value to add to this thread other than it makes me chuckle every time I see it come up ( and that would be once every 6-12 months or so)...it should definitely win the "timeless thread award"...I'm always curious how it stays in the database so long.
That all being said, I really do like the idea of "little huts over water" so I would love to find one of these destinations some day. Keep posting and long live the "little hut" post!
cheers, Laura

Many, many overwater bungalows in the lagoons of French Polynesia, including Bora Bora, Moorea and a number of other islands.

Little huts over water close to the Caribbean for Laura - check out www.corallodge.com on the east coast of Panama. We had reservations, but had to cancel last minute due to serious illness.

www.sheratonmoorea.com stayed there and asked for an upgrade when we arrived, saved big$$ could swim from room and could see entire sunset. www.anthonyskey.com stayed here and the huts were partially over water.

Sheraton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa in Tahiti is beautiful but a bit expensive. The Island is quite small and there are 3 different resorts that all have huts over the water. Some have glass floors or looking windows to the water below.

Much closer and much less$ than Tahiti. Numerous small resorts with little huts over the water can be found in Bocas Del Toro island chain in Panama. Several seem to be the only accomodation on their respective island but water taxis seem readily available to bocas town. planning a trip there now. We loved Anthony's Cay on Roatan but while the villas are on the water they aren't really over it. We were very disappointed with Ambergris Cay in Belize after the beauty of Roatan.
