TSA Pre-Check
      #1577517 - 03/24/14 10:27 PM (174.25.166.157)

I've just been approved for TSA Pre-Check. It cost $85 and is good for five years. No more taking shoes off or unpacking liquids or laptop. I applied on line, was given an appointment to be finger-printed, and just received my Known Traveler Number in today's mail. I'm a Happy Camper.

If I might ask, where did you have to go for your prints? A federal facility or somewhere local?

I am sitting in JB terminal at JFK on my way home and had TSA pre check stamped on my boarding pass. How did I get that? I never applied for it..not complaining though

Barbara,

I agree. This happened to me when I went to Key West last December. I never applied for anything but it was stamped right on my boarding pass. Same thing happened when I printed out the return passes for Key West to Boston. However, the Pre-Check isn't allowed in Key West. Something about them being too small or not being set up for it. So, this begs the question, what are people paying $85 for? Or are they confusing TSA Pre-Check with Global Entry? Global Entry is the one that you have to be fingerprinted for.

The TSA precheck is a completely random pick. This has happened twice to my wife and I, and both times it was she who was picked . She went thru security in 9 minutes and was reading a book for one hour before I made it thru the security line. The global entry is wonderful for getting quickly thru immigration, but, you then have to wait for checked bags the same as everyone else.

WayneH and Barbara, Airlines can nominate their frequent flyers for acceptance into the TSA precheck program. Perhaps your airline nominated you because you met their criteria.

There is no Pre-Check line at PJIA so you'll use the regular security lines. Personally I love Pre-Check which I get thru Delta (probably cuz of my FF status) as I have never applied for it. Don never has applied either and he is assigned Pre-Check if we're on the same ticket. Saves us oodles of time in Atlanta but you do have to be careful. Not all Pre-Check lines have the body scanners & Don cannot go thru the magnetron scanner at all & I have 2 artificial hips so we have to get wanded depending on the departure airport.

I did a bit of research on the difference to solidify this in my mind. My husband and I have been TSA pre-check for a few years. We were selected by our airlines as we are both FF.
If you are not selected by the airlines you can apply for TSA pre-check for $85. TSA pre-check and Global Entry ($100 Fee) require interviews and fingerprinting.
The benefits of TSA precheck are "No Removal of:Belt, Shoes, Light outerwear/jacket, 3-1-1 compliant bag and laptop from carry-on."

According to the TSA website it can be used for international departure. "TSA PreCheck is available for passengers traveling domestically within the United States and for international travel when departing from a U.S. airport that participates in TSA PreCheck. Passengers may also be eligible for TSA PreCheck when connecting to a domestic flight after arriving to the United States on international travel." When we first got TSA pre-check this wasn't the case.

"Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States.Global Entry members are eligible for TSA PreCheck benefits."

If traveling solely within the US TSA Precheck works fine but for international travel Global Entry is the way to go. Also there is no guarantee that if you are in either program that you will be able to use as there are random screening.
This is it in a nutshell, hope it helps.

left jfk to sxm, no removing shoes, belt, jacket, breezed right thru...though they did do a chemical wand test on my hands...coming home from sxm to jfk, same thing, no shoe removal, nothing removed from carryon, then was boarded with first class group...never applied for any tsa precheck, fly basically once per year...was an easy one this year!!

There is no TSA Precheck for International inbound flights to the United States, only on connecting flights after arrival to the USA.

If you haven't applied for Pre-Check or Global Entry, getting Pre-Check is totally random. For instance, on a recent trip to FLL, I had Pre-Check on the outbound flight but not on the return. I commented to the TSA Agent about that and he encouraged me to apply, saying the TSA wants people to apply.

I went to a small office as directed by my online appointment. I assume it was a government office of some sort. There really wasn't an "interview" - the woman just verified my online answers and then took my fingerprints.

Only after I received my approval did I learn that Pre-Check is automatically included if you have Global Entry. Had I known that, I would have gone for Global Entry. No, I'm not confusing the two, Wayne; I have Pre-Check only and I did have to be fingerprinted.

Linda,

Thanks for the update and clarification. It almost sounds worthwhile but because it can't be used in every airport I am hesitant to spend the $85. They never did say why it can't be used at Key West. They only said that it can't be. Oh, well.

While precheck is not available "everywhere" it is pretty much available in all major airports in all states. Precheck not being available would be the exception not the rule. I would suggest you visit the TSA website to look at the list (over 120 airports) and check to see if the locations meet your particular flying patterns. As to why it isn't available at Key West - cost/benefit = passenger traffic.

Is it possible to upgrade to Global Entry by paying the difference or would they want the full 100 to start all over?

To me, if one were to do it, it seems logical to just do global entry from the start. Are you saying that you have paid for pre-check by itself?

Global Entry is a CBP program and is administered by CBP. TSA has nothing to do with Global Entry. The only relationship is that membership in a CBP trusted traveler program entitles you to expedited screening(precheck)Separate programs, separate fees.

First nice meeting you at BBB!! We were so confused, when AA gave us our boarding passes at PJIA thats where it said TSA PreCheck? but there were no special lines, not that we would have even known what to do!!! Wonder why it was stamped on our tickets if it isnt offered at the airport

There is no TSA Pre-check at SXM because there is no TSA at SXM, no matter what is printed on your boarding pass.

Where the Pre-check would come in handy is wherever you clear Immigration and make a connection in the US. If you're connecting in MIA, for example, after you clear Immigration and Customs you have to recheck your bags and then reclear security. You should be able to use the TSA Pre-check security line at MIA.

It's been years since I flew out of Key West, but I remember the airport as being tiny. Is there even room for a TSA Pre-check security line at EYW?

No, I was just wondering. I could get pre check done quickly in time for the May 9th trip but I don't think I have enough time for the Global Entry process. Especially if they have to have your passport for any length of time which I'm not sure if they do.

You do not give up your passport, you take it with you to the interview and it is always in sight. MJ was able to get the complete process done in under two weeks, it took me three. It all comes down to getting the appointment for the interview. I would suggest if you do not see a date prior to your trip to wait and keep checking to see if there is a cancellation and then grab that spot, that is what we did.

Just so you know however, this will not help with the lines at Flamingo for check in or the car rental counter!

Cheers,
T

We had it randomly applied to us just a couple of days ago on our way to the island. Printed out our boarding passes for a US Air flight and noticed the TSAPRECHK on her boarding pass. Didn't pay much attention to it until we got to the security area and they gave my wife the option to go in another line but not me! She decided to stay in the line I was in anyway.

Very funny the randomness of it. Even the boarding zones on our boarding passes were different. Hers was zone 2 and mine was zone 4, even though we were sitting together! We ignored the zone 4 and boarded together with zone 2. Just strikes me as funny that our reservations had both of our FF numbers on them and we both have identical points in our FF accounts. Go figure

This same thing happened to us on our last trip to the island. We are both Trusted Travelers via the Global Entry program, but TSA Precheck is random. When I got it and David didn't, I took the carry-on that contained our liquids and laptop, which made it easier for him.

We also both had it printed on our boarding passes when we left SXM. Since they don't have separate lines it's meaningless there.

I did find this on the TSA precheck site:

Q. If I have already been approved for Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or if I already have a KTN, do I need to apply for the TSA Pre✓ application program?
A. Individuals who already have a KTN, including U.S. citizens who are members of Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI and Canadian citizen members of NEXUS, need not enroll in the TSA Pre✓ application program.

Why was one stamped and the other not? Could it be because your KTN number isn't on both your airlines profiles?
I just want to make sure I apply for the right program as going through the TSA check line quickly is more important to me than the immigration line as I usually have plenty of time for that.

Because TSA precheck is random. You are not guaranteed to get it every time you fly, even though your numbers are correctly recorded in your airline profile.

It was my understanding that once you have your number, any future flight bookings you would get Pre-Check. Any already purchased tickets would be random.

I am certainly no expert on this, and we are new to the program so still learning.
Cheers,

No, things have not changed, you are correct - pre-check randomly selects pre-check travelers for "spot" checks just to "test" the system as does global entry.

Hi Jazz, It's not that easy. Not all airports have it -- those that do are fine, those that don't -- you still have to take shoes off etc. The good news is that it's expanding. :)

My understanding is that if you have global entry, you can enjoy Tsa precheck as well if you provide your known traveler number/passid when making your reservation. We always enter our numbers regardless if the airport or airline participate. Prior to travel, I check the goes website to see if Tsa precheck is an option.

We had TSA Precheck on both our boarding passes on our recent trip to SXM. It really saved our butts on the return flight when we had only about 30 mins to make our connection in Charlotte! Also, the AARP Magazine just had a small article about this. It said the PreCheck is now used by 9 airlines and at some 120 US airports. It did note, however, that even if you become a certified PreCheck flier, you will still sometimes be asked to enter the full-security line.

My interview appointment is at 1:00 PM at the airport on the same day we fly to SXM at 9:20pm. Should make for a fun busy day. Luckily we are only 30 min from the airport.

The same here Bucky...printed on my boarding pass not my husbands. The strange thing with it was after we put all our stuff in the bins and on the belt a TSA officer came over to me and told me to put my shoes back on and come with him. People around us were all "big eyed"....I'm sure wondering what I had done....LOL. After walking a good 20 feet away from the bin/belt and of course my husband, he says go thru there and gave me a green card. I said to him my husband is back with all our stuff...cash, coats, shoes, laptop, two carry-ons, belts, watches, all of course in seperate bins because he [TSA guy] told us to, I asked if I could help him and he said no that I had to stay where I was. Needless to say, it was sheer confusion for my husband, one - he didn't know what was going on or where I was and two - making sure he has all of our belongings!! If I had known what was up, I would have said no thanks I'll stay here, but he was acting all official [which he should], and I wasn't going to say no...LOL

I had the TSA precheck going to SXM (JFK) this month, but wasn't sent to a different line.
I was just told I didn't have to take off items, BUT when I tried to walk through with my purse I was told to go back and put it in a bin where my husband was.
Didn't seem to make much of a difference.

My husband had it on the way back and, like someone said, nothing happened from SXM.

Yeah, you still have to put all bags on the belt, but you shouldn't have to take anything out of your bags (laptops, liquid bag) or remove shoes/belts.

I've used it three times now and it makes life SO much easier!

for some reason I had it on my ticket out of SXM - they don't have it, but in Miami it was great...different line and didn't have to take out the laptop or take off my shoes...do they randomly give it to travelers??

You have to go to the "TSA precheck" security line. Even with pre check on boarding pass, if you get in standard line then you go through normal

security screening process.

More security theatre...why pay $85-$100 when they are giving it away?
Love when we get it, but makes no sense when my wife and I are spilt up!
More TSA nonsense.
