Wendell,

Twenty or so years ago we used to enjoy a dinner spot on Simpson Bay right at the waters edge, Le Pavillion. I think was the name. It was destroyed in one of the many storms that hit the area over the years and I've since tried to place it along the beach and can't. Any clue to where it was located? I know it was closer to the concrete plant that used to be there which would put it closer to the lagoon inlet but I can't figure out exactly where that was. Any thoughts?

Well thank you anyway, Wendell. I know annie remembers it as fondly as we do....a lovely little spot with very good food on the beach/water with lights shining into the waves as they broke just below us. And along came whatever big storm and it was toast......never to be rebuilt. And as I'm thinking about it, it was probably destroyed further back than that since I seem to remember our son-in-law being with us there at least once or twice before he and Kim were married.

No, actually not. Indiana Jones was where the Greenhouse is now.

Along time ago I remember going to a place in that general area called Felix. It was a pretty nice place and there wasn't that much other choices in the area then. Any one know what's there now or if anything is? It was just before you turned in to Pelican as I remember but it was a long time ago.

While people are remembering, does anyone remember the old Marriott and where it was? I think it was in the Nettle Bay area, probably around 30 years ago.

Trying to think back here and while I know for a fact the Mullet Bay Resort and Casino was run for a while by/as a Sheraton, I seem to recall someone telling me it was also run by/as a Marriott for a while. I honestly do not recall this - so it may or may not be a fact. The mind is a terrible thing to lose....

You know me I love old pics and memories!

What made the Simpson Bay area so special for us was not what has happening at night at Indiana Jones, but what happened very early in the morning at this place.

William and Philippe were up early making some very special treats. A cup of coffee and pastry with a little discussion was always the best way to start a day on SXM.

I still have this handwritten note by Philippe telling us where to go to dinner.

We hit Bistro and Tropicana during our stay, and had unforgettable meals. Do not know what happened to William and Philippe, but they were definitely part of the SXM magic for us.

Pictures were taken the first week of October 2000

Le Pavillion was down by the church in Simpson Bay just a little bit before it on the left. The last time I was down there it was an empty lot. They had great food & you used to cross over the little bridge to get to the restaurant it was a beautiful setting. It was destroyed during Hurricane Luis but it had already gone downhill because the owner & his wife had split & he was really hitting the bottle which of course affected the food. I think we went there the first time in the late 80's. His wife went over to help start Rancho's when it first opened & then of course they lost their whole roof, which just lifted off, in Luis. If you go to Rancho's now you will see how that roof is affixed I don't think it would come off again so easily.... Felix's restaurant was the first place to occupy where Greenhouse now is & then it became Indiana Jones & then Greenhouse. Felix's had the best Rack of Lamb & Chateaubriand for two....

Royal Palm was a Marriott recommended resort for awhile & there was a sign by the bridge for a few years. I never remember Mullett being under them & our business did & still does a good majority of the Marriott room pictures & we did not do Mullett.

I believe that Philippe is now & has been for quite awhile the manager of Captain Oliver's & that William has retired.

Ah memories..Bill proposed at Indiana's. I didn't realize they were that touristy until they offered to take a picture of us that was superimposed with the Indiana logo (and yes we still have it ). In between Indiana and Greenhouse was a Mexican place called Picante, I believe. It was easy to forget as it didn't last long.

ps The first page of the Mullett resort brochure Kim scanned into her picture portfolio she posted here last week has "Marriott" over its name.

Thank you Barbara and Sharon for the update on William and Philippe. If you see them tell them hello from someone in the past that they do not remember. Please let them know that they helped make SXM a special place for this tourist.

Sharon,

I didn't notice it either so don't feel bad and as to the pictures, etc., and Mullet Bay Resort, don't feel bad about it. We had to have stayed there when Marriot was running it, just as we did when it was managed by Sheraton, but truth be known, all they really did was lend their name, probably much as is the case with the Sapphire. Basically, all they did was manage, and truth be known as I remember it at Mullet, they didn't do too great a job at that in dealing with their way and the island way. The island way won out in the end and Sheraton didn't last all that long. I'm thinking it was probably the same thing with the Marriot but who's to say?

Picante had the one of the best burgers on island, did not know that the owners were associated with E&F in Porto, we have enjoyed a couple breakfast there.
