Need advice on Kindle and the like.
      #1582756 - 04/14/14 02:27 PM (98.227.230.197)

I'm gonna break down and get one, some sort of kindle to bring on vacation especially for the beach. What do TTOL folks like the best and why? I have an IPad that I travel with but can't use it on the beach, to hard to see and too large to handle for reading a novel. Thanks in advance!

I use the Kindle Paperwhite. It's small and the screen is easy to see in any kind of light. Because it has a built-in light, you can even read it in the dark without disturbing your partner.

I agree. I've used my Kindle paperwhite for several years now on SXM. Can't be beat in the full sun.

I've brought & used on SXM beaches both the low-end basic Kindle and I've now the 2nd generation Paperwhite. As mentioned by others, the Paperwhite has an internal light for night time or low ambient-light reading.

For me the upgrade from Kindle basic to a Paperwhite was a no-brainer. Besides beach & pool-side use, I've used it in planes, airports, trains, waiting rooms and bed-time. Way more usage than the Kindle basic.

If you spend the extra 50 or so bucks for the 3g your kindle browser will work on Orient beach! I used it to check my mail and facebook. This is only for the eink kindles. The fire's do not get free internet.

Another vote for Kindle Paperwhite... I double ziploc bag it and take it with me into the pool as well. Great in daylight, great in dim light, and great at night in bed.

I use a 7 inch Samsung Galaxy Tablet for travel. It's light and it allows you to check email. Plus you can watch Netflix with a good wifi connection.

Just a thought.....I have the original Kindle as opposed to the up-dated model and use it strictly for reading on the beach or at the pool (where, sadly, it decided to check out the bottom one time.... and ultimately had to be replaced...) and it works just fine. If you're purchasing an e-reader with that as it's only planned use, I'd go for the least expensive Kindle out there and be done with it. If it takes a swim or gets sand inside - oh well, though with a little bit of care, neither should happen and you'll enjoy it for a lot of trips to the beach.

I inherited my wifes older Kindle when she got the Kindle Fire. The old Kindle is very easy to read in direct sunlight even with polarized sunglasses where as the Fire is very difficult. All books are loaded on both since the acct is the same.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts.
My sunglasses are polarized but I think for most of my reading I'll have to use my readers anyways which are not polarized. That is something I wouldn't have thought about and don't know if the salesperson would mention/know.
Any issues with battery life?

I have a Kindle Touch. Before going on vacation, I download 7 books from my library and then shut off the wifi. I recharge the battery after 4 dsys or so whether I need to or not.

I found some bifocal polarized sun glasses that I use on the beach. It might be a better option if you have a hard time with the bright sun.

How long is the battery supposed to last, when using the backlight?

While I can't give you an exact time, it's surprisingly long. There is only one issue I have with the lighting, there is no sensor, so adjusting the light is totally manual, and it's easy to leave the light running full bore when you really don't need it.

That being said, it still blows away anything else I've used for readability in any condition.

That's an good point, Scott. I also found it interesting that the instructions suggest that you use a lower light level in the dark, and a higher one in brighter light. I've pretty much just set mine where it's comfortable for reading in the dark, a fairly low level, and don't adjust it for daytime reading as I find I don't really need the light then.

As far as battery life is concerned, I usually charge mine about once a week. The battery truly does last a long time, and if you turn the WiFi off it lasts even longer.

The polarization issue usually only effects one orientation or the other. My Nexus 7 works fine with polarized glasses when held vertical but will appear blank when turned horizontal.
