Price of Limes
      #1587712 - 05/06/14 09:03 PM (75.172.60.98)

Has the lime shortage affected the price in St Maarten like it has in the States? Just paid a buck each in WA.

Yes, No one is buying limes at the price. Everyone is using lemons for now. No limes even on the cruise ships.

Thanks for the information. Limes will be in my carry-on. I can still find them at 3 for $2.00 in my local area.

Thanks Bob. Looks like my Rum&Coke will be void of the lime. Leaves more room for Rum. Can't imagine a margarita with lemons.

An authentic margy can be made with either lime or lemon. Juice of one-half lime OR lemon, 2 parts GOOD tequila, 1 part Cointreau (or Gran Gala or Grand Marnier), shake well with ice and pour into a salted glass. As a friend of mine says "What are we drinking tonight? Shots on ice???"

Limes are 99 cents here in Western Canada. They are often 33 cents.

That deserves a Red Card, no, they can not be made with Lemons and be Authentic. Such a different flavor, not a Margarita at that point, may taste OK but not a Margarita. Lemons are not common in Mexico.

I also will state, it is not just the price but also the quality of limes that is the issue. Some produce plenty of juice, many at this time do not. I have paid $4 for 3 limes but I got quality limes.

Yes, I am very picky about my drinks that have lime.

I think we need to find a way to grow limes at home, in the US or Canada or wherever. Not just for home use, but all the Mexican restaurants who are not able to use them now due to the cost.

A disease wiped out most of the Florida lime groves years ago and they were never replanted. Nearly all limes now come from Mexico. Heavy rains have delayed the harvest. The shortage should be alleviated in a few weeks when they can resume picking the fruit. (I just paid 89 cents apiece for three limes; not too long ago they were five for a dollar at the same store.)

How come I'm not seeing this as a big deal? After airline tickets, hotel and car rental expenses the last thing I would worry about was if a lime cost me a buck! Maybe it's just me but I'm kind of a "Don't sweat the small stuff" kind of person.

I agree that individually, you can deal with paying the going price for limes, but a restaurant that uses cases of limes a day, they have had to switch to lemons. It has affected them in a big way, people want their limes.

Correct Todd! A T&T without a lime is like a St. Maarten day without sunshine.

No they were .85 each. I thought they were a little pricey, but I didn't know about the fact that they are hard to get right now.

We are not helping with the lime shortage. Drinking lots of margarita$$$ at home and can only imagine the cost on island. Currently we are paying $1/lime. Although I don't know the rate in SXM, friends there have confirmed the shortage is effecting them as well.

Just went out for dinner, the boys had lime with their beers. Was talking with the waitress about the price of limes here in the states. She said they're paying $100 a case!

Bad weather out west then the drug cartels stole all the Mexican fruit. I agree, no substitute for a good lime. I thought the price would come down a bit after 5/5 just like gas after labor day. Wholesale in Boston went to 47 a case but in Nashville still 80 this week.

My first experience with a Great Lime Shortage was in the late 80's. We dealt with it by either using Lemons or going without, and I brought 6 limes with me on every trip for the next few years.

The hard one, also in the late 80's, was The Great Toilet Paper Shortage. That one wasn't so easy to deal with.

When you're on an island, and the container with the resupply of X doesn't come in...

my mom has lime blossoms as well. The bees were very busy so should yield some limes, I told her to protect them like gold! (my 5 yo nephew, her grandson, love to pick her flowers from her backyard hence the warning) =)

Here in Texas, the lime trees bloom much earlier - I already have about 50 limes the size of a large grape - also, they are not expensive in our grocery store - last week I got them at 2 for $0.44 - I think I will just bring a few with us - don't mind paying more on island, but I would be concerned that they might be out altogether by the time we get there in15 days!

The rumor I heard is that the Mexican cartels are PRODUCING all the limes now in Mexico. Guess their other ventures weren't giving them enough profits?

Limes at Le Grand Marche yesterday were US$.86 a piece.
They are small key lime type limes but they don't have much juice in them.
I stopped at a few roadside fruit stands and no one had limes. They get their limes usually from Dominica.
One lady told me even from Dominica the price is too high now.

Many years ago, I switched to lime juice. It's easier and I enjoy the flavor, so for me it's much better.

sometime you can try rolling them on a hard surface kind of smooshing them with your palm before cutting and that will bring forth a little more juice (also brings out the oil in the skins but I've had limes before that even this trick didn't work, just dry dry limes)

You can also throw them into a microwave for about 30 seconds, that usually works.
