Lost Passport
      #1587921 - 05/07/14 06:04 PM (66.212.216.179)

Friend has lost her passport, traveling in 8 days to SXM - lives in FT Lauderdale area and is not real comfortable with on line forms. Is there a walk up place where she can go to get a replacement on the spot (as she does have a 2012 expired passport) at the airport or somewhere else? Thanks.

Miami is your best bet. Make sure she has two new pictures for the new pass port. Fed's will do it on the spot same day but you have to supply the proper passport pictures.

Make sure she reads and complies with all the info on the Miami Passport Office website.

http://travel.state.gov/content/passport...cies/miami.html

The passport office folks are really helpful and bend over backwards to help you but you do need to prepare for your appointment...

If you have a photocopy of your lost passports photo page, definitely bring it with you...it helps! We always have copies of our passports' photo pages in our wallets and in the safe in our room in the resort just in case we need them when we travel...

It says on the passport web site it's illegal to make photo copies of passport. Guess I'm illegal. You're crazy not to have copies just in case.

Several years ago we were returning from SXM and the C&I officer spotted my copy. He became very alert and said "Why do you have a copy of your passport? Do you know it is illegal to make a copy of your passport?" When I told him I wanted it in case my passport got lost or stolen. He calmed down and said "ok". We still carry our copies!

Where exactly does it say this? I could not find it. All Iwas able to find is this recommendation from the State Department:

Make two photocopies of all your travel documents in case of emergency or if your documents are lost or stolen. Leave one copy with a friend or relative at home. It is always a great idea to let at least one person know exactly where you will be staying and how to contact you in an emergency. Carry the other copy with you stored separately from the originals. Documents to make copies of include:

Passport ID page
Foreign visa (if applicable)
Itinerary
Hotel confirmation
Airline ticket
Driver's license
Credit cards brought on the trip
Traveler's check serial numbers

NO, NO, NO... It is NOT illegal to copy your passport ID page, it is in fact RECOMMENDED,

From travel.state.gov:

"Do You Have Photocopies of Your Itinerary and Travel Documents?
Make two photocopies of all your travel documents in case of emergency or if your documents are lost or stolen. Leave one copy with a friend or relative at home. It is always a great idea to let at least one person know exactly where you will be staying and how to contact you in an emergency. Carry the other copy with you stored separately from the originals. Here is the link: http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/go/checklist.html

The "it is illegal" is an urban legend!

What IS illegal is making an completely identical duplicate passport...BIG difference!
