For my TTOL friends who are not also my Facebook friends:

I created a blog to write about our recent trip to China, but was unable to access it while in China as their government blocks many social media sites. I have only posted one entry since we got home yesterday, but if you're interested, here's the link

I read your first entry, looking forward to reading more. Those restless nights at an airport are for the birds, but at least you got out at 6 a.m. But that's a whole lot of up time from the time you left Shanghai, hope you get some kind of compensation from your trip insurance for that.

I'm not sure, as I thought the insurance would only reimburse us for actual expenses. I'll have to see if I can get something for "pain and suffering"

I also plan to write a letter to United. For us to have been given a room at a budget motel, after having flown business class roundtrip to China, is ridiculous, especially since that room never materialized.

Wow! What a bad way to end a vacation. I guess it's better to happen at the end rather than the beginning. Looking forward to reading your trip report. Anon Ellie

I can only imagine how travel insurance varies, but I know the one I had most recently paid out if your flight was delayed and you missed your original connecting flight.

Georgia, thanks so much for taking us along on your latest adventure. I've been enjoying your blog and your description of the breakfast buffet has me missing char sui/hom bow (the steamed dumplings) that I lived on as a college student in Hawaii! Hope to see you and David in December. LeAnn

Hom Bow, memories. I have not had Hom Bow yet that was better than at the Portland Saturday Market 20 or so years ago.

Can not remember his name, age. He was an ex fighter pilot and I really liked all his food but the Hom Bow (sp?) was fantastic.

Cheers,
T

Ah Todd, now you've got me missing Saturday Market too! That was a weekly trip for us girls back in the 70s....I went the last time I was in town and it is so totally NOT the same vibe. Still fun, though.

I still have the beautiful oak furniture I had built by the guy at Pioneer Furniture, remember him?

His name was Ha, and he also had spring rolls that were pretty good. I spent a lot of time at the Saturday market from the mid 70's until the early 80's, I remember some but not others. Mostly I knew the food people. It certainly does not have the same vibe it did, too sterile compared to the hippy past.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but it brought back a great trip down memory lane all because of Hom Bow.

I am going to go put on my Birkenstocks now.
Todd

Georgia -- I'm enjoying your blog very much. I too would have been in awe of the soldiers and looked forward to the rickshaw ride. Can't wait to read more.

The Terra Cotta Army, must have been so fascinating that would be worth the trip alone, in my books.....kate

Kate, you're absolutely right. It is simply unbelievable when you consider everything involved. It was my second favorite experience of the trip, after the day we were invited into a local Chinese home.

I was wondering the same thing.... It's been a wonderful read and I'm going to miss it when the trip draws to a close.

Thanks.......there is a different vibe from the Tuscany trip....
One day you will have to come to Toronto for your food fest, Toronto is the most diverse city on the Planet & has the food & wine to go with it....check out the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo in November...there are direct flights on Porter from Myrtle Beach to Island Airport downtown Toronto....
Nice reading your reports.....thanks
kate

Yes, Kate, a completely different experience. As I posted early on, I knew this trip would not be all about the food, but it is still something we wanted to experience. Tuscany was food, food, and more food. And wine, wine, and more wine!

Toronto sounds fabulous, and to be honest, we might just drive there. We've sort of decided that the next few years might be spent more on the ground than in the air. Is the Food and Wine Expo every November? If it doesn't conflict with SXM, we might look into that for next year.

Loved the stories. So glad you enjoyed your vacation. Have thought a few times of going to China and if my wife and I never get there I can at least have the memories from your stories.
