Fads of the 60's, 70's and 80's
      #1597956 - 07/09/14 09:42 PM (71.254.116.231)

I thought I would write a blog story about the fads of the 60's, 70's and 80's as I remember them. Figured I could Google them to see what they said were the fads, but then I thought ..... who better would know the fads of these three eras than the people on this great board. Any thing you can remember? One of the things I remember the best was the mood ring that my friend josh Reynolds developed in the mid-1970s. You have to remember them. Can you help me out with your own memories. Thanks, Larry

Hot pants were the in fashion style for ladies featured in lots of bright colors. High style fashion boots were very popular as well. Bell bottom pants for men and women and shoes with a slight heel for men; also plaids were popular during this time.

Liesure Suits! Campus protests, "stick it to the man", Polynesian restaurants, DC-7 and Lockheed Constellation prop airliners, FM radio slowly beginning to challange AM stations, TV networks (NBC, CBS, and the "upstart" ABC) shifting their black and white programming to the newfangled "compatible color", creation of PBS, Crocket's Victory Garden, rotary dial telephones shifting to touch tone, creation of Area Codes so you could dial your own long distance phone calls, creation of the transistor, first transistor shirt pocket AM radios, cars appearing with four headlights instead of just two...

I'll help with the 80's (those were my teen years) - boom box radios, van's "off the wall" slip on's, cell phones that weighted 8 lbs and cost $3.00 per minute to talk, MTV (actually showed music videos), rainbow sweat shirts, Jordache Jeans (I think I spelled that right?), Sony Walkman, Atari/PacMan/Mrs PacMan.

I'm a child of the 60s. Started high school in Sept 1960 and graduated college in May 1970.

Boy were those the days to grow up starting with Motown and Elvis in the early 60s to the summer of love in 1969. 3 major assassinations, Vietnam, the peace movement, the British music invasion.

We were married in May 1969 to cap it off, so this year was our 45th anniversary.

Muscle Cars were also a big trend of the 60s.

And to make it more interesting, beer and wine were legal in NC at age 18 back then.

Speaking of the good ole days - remember gas wars between gas stations? When I first started driving gas was under 20 cents per gallon and as low as 15 cents.

Tires were good for maybe 10,000 miles if you were lucky. Retreads - don't see them anymore.

I still remember the day in 1976 when gas hit $1.00 for the first time, and of course the good old gas crunch with the oil embargo and waiting in long lines at gas stations. 55 mph on interstates.

Bill,

In NY in the 60's, a female could marry at eighteen but a guy still needed parental consent until age twenty-one. My FIL threatened NOT to sign for DH ........but he ultimately caved.

And then we moved to CT a year later and I had to get DH's consent as my legal 'guardian' to get my CT drivers license. By that time we were expecting our first child but I still needed permission to have a license. Go figger.....

And the gas pumps couldn't register more than .99 so a 1 was added on the face plate * I guess inside gears were changed to accommodate. Bought a 1953 Chevy for $10. Went to the gas station put in $2 of gas and $2 of oil

In 1969 I was at Patrick AFB FL as a 2nd Lt. electronics engineer working on Apollo and other space programs. In adition to my "college car" I had purchased a used Honda 50cc motorcycle with a one gallon gas tank to ride around the base. I could go to the BX gas station on fumes, fill the tank, and get change from a quarter! Gas was $0.19 per gallon!

I remember that well! Living in an Ontario border town us under 21s would go "over the river" to Niagara Falls or Buffalo, NY to the bars to drink. The legal age in Ontario at the time was 21. Also the bars in Ontario closed at 11:30 back then while NYS bars closed around 3 am.

We got rid of those muscle cars in the 70's since gas prices went up. I traded mine in when gas went way up to $.46 a gallon in 1974! I could make payments on my little four banger with the savings in gasoline.

I forget the model but we had an IBM computer with dual 5 inch floppy drives, no hard drive and a 6 inch color monitor: Green and black! I think it had 25K of memory. $20,000 in those days for our business that we were required to have but never used, Even the company that required us to get it didn't use it. I think it was the first desktop size computer running DOS. It did have some games! LOL I was very happy when the Apple came out and later the Macintosh.

My first computer had 2 floppy drive, paid extra for that extreme feature! My monitor was the amber one!

Eventually was able to splurge and get that huge 10 meg hard drive, was in heaven as I had unlimited storage and could never ever use it all!

I used to dial up for the internet. The University of Maine in this area had four phone lines. You had to wait in order to use it if it was a 'busy' time. I did some work for the University so I was one of the lucky few in this area to get a loggin id. We went through different modems since they kept coming up with faster and faster (snail's pace).

I also had to boot it up each time.

Fun memories, indeed!

One fad that I haven't seen mentioned yet was slitting the legs of a pair of pants and inserting a gusset of a contrasting fabric to create the ultimate bell-bottoms. I remember making matching pairs for myself and my boyfriend. And of course, they were hip-huggers worn with a wide belt.

I don't think that long sideburns has been mentioned yet. I also really, really remember the Brylcreem ads on TV - a little dab will do ya. Guys pretty much had slicked back hair and of course the ole flat top fad - I had one as well as long sideburns. Funny to look at those old pictures now.

Cars w/o air conditioning were standard and the rolled down windows. I had one new dorm in college with air conditioning, and that was it till I moved into an apartment for my 1st job out of college.

I want to thank all who have responded to my OP. Quite a few things that I had forgotten about. I too remember the test pattern on Sat. morning followed by Covered Wagon Theatre. Also the buckles on the back of boys pants that scratched school desks until they banned them from school. Lone Ranger and Tonto, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, Davy Crockett, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, etc. were my TV heroes. TVs that had 3 colors across them that people called color TV. The Henry J, Kaiser and Fraiser automobiles. Moon hubcaps for the car. The hula hoop which I absolutely could not do. My list can go on and on. Thanks to all who contributed already and I'm sure there will be more answers to my OP. Will be a challenge to type a story that doesn't require chapters. I find if I type something too long, fewer people look at it so I may have to write it in parts. If anyone prefers not to have me copy and paste some items, send me a PM and let me know. Thanks again.

In the 60's we had to go to our grandmothers to watch TV while my older brother and father milked the cows. We watched 'Our Gang' (now called 'Little Rascals'). There was a commercial on then for PF Flyers. Everyone wanted these since you could leap tall fences and do other amazing things.

We had a streaker at our high school. He ran across the parking lot with a bag over his head and tried to jump into the back of a van. It took off too quickly and he fell. They caught him since he was the only male student of color in the school. (true story!)

Partylines (waaay before MySpace and Facebook!), oh and letters included in your phone number and the operator actually hooked you up (if the line was open) or she would call you back when the call could go thru (and it was always a "she" operator).

People have mentioned the short shorts on guys; how about those mid-calf white athletic socks with big horizontal stripes at the top?

CLOTHES: You are talking about athletic tube socks, went with converse tennis shoes, coaches shorts, Calvin kline jeans, smocks with hip hugger elephant pants, izod shirts.

8 track tapes, cb's steering wheels knobs...

pop rocks, pizza franchises like godfathers, and pizza hut become popular, tab soda, tang,

I remember the small screen tv my dad bought in the forties. He put this oil filled magnifier over the screen to make it look bigger. One Saturday morning my brother and I were sitting in front of the tv. My brother was testing his knee reflexes when he hit the right spot and put his foot right through the magnifier. My mom heard the crash and came running in, she hit the oil and slid through two rooms. No one was injured, except my brothers butt.

How about the "Moon Boots" with the Wonder Bread bags around your feet to help keep them dry.

There is always the good cartoons such as: Looney Tunes, Woody Woodpecker, Tom & Jerry, Yogi Bear, Speedy Gonzales. Of course they were only available on Saturday morning. Although if we tried to spend to much time in front of the TV (the "Idiot Box" as dad called it) mom would find us a job to because we must be bored from just sitting there rotting our brain.

What about Fizzies? The amazing little tablets you dropped into a glass of water and watch them explode into a sugar delight of fruit flavors, and Root Beer my favorite. Then in 68 the mean old FDA force them off market because they said they contained cyclamates, which gave them their sweetness, caused cancer in mice. Outrageous - Who cares about mice!

How many took the double dare of skipping the glass of water and just letting a Fizzie tablet explode in your mouth?

I loved Fizzies without the water! I didn't put the entire tablet in my mouth, but did eat small pieces at a time.

I finally posted a story on my blog about the fads from the 60s to the 80's. Thanks for all the help I got on TTOL. I know I can always count on everyone to share their thoughts and memories. I added some of the comments you have given me and gave credit where needed. Sorry if I didn't use all comments, but after my story reaches a certain length, I know it is time to cut it off or no one will read the entire story. Click on the link below to see if your help was used. Thanks again. Larry
