Global Entry
      #1624942 - 01/13/15 05:24 AM (107.4.10.181)

Going for my interview Wednesday. Figured I might as well since it only costs $100. We will see if it's worth on the way back through Miami in February.

Miami has the kiosks, probably about 20 of them. It was very quick for us on New Year's Eve. You'll probably have to wait on the bags, which is what we did.

How long from when you start does the vetting process take? We are starting to take more international trips and I'm considering it. Next upcoming trip is in late March. How soon would I need to start the process to have it for that?

Thanks

We did it last year (we live in the NYC area) and the vetting process was pretty quick. We had our interview at Newark Airport. It took all of about 10 minutes. I would start the process now if you are planning to use it this March. A major benefit even if you fly domestically most of the time is that you will always get TSA precheck, but make sure to register your Global Entry status with the airlines that you fly on.

If you fly much at all, getting TSA pre-check all the time is a big benefit!

You go to the global entry website, and fill out the application. Once you submit the application, they give you a code that you can check the status of your application. I think it was within two weeks of submitting the application, I logged in and the invitation to schedule your interview was the status of my application. It gave you a link where it shows you all of the places that you can schedule your interview, and the interview itself is about 5 minutes. They would have already done the backup check on you, the process is more about doing the picture and taking a print of your hands. I had a hard time pressing down hard enough on the glass, I recall. The place you choose to do the interview is really the biggest question mark, they may only do interviews on Tuesdays from 10:00 until 2:00, or maybe only the third Thursday of every month. You schedule at the dates and times available, knowing that most places are not doing the interviews on a daily basis. Once my interview was done, they still mailed the card to me, I understand some people take the card home with them.

I find I do have to alert the airlines as to my global entry status, and with the mergers going on, it seems I have to notify them more than once.

Even if you have global entry you are not guaranteed to get TSA precheck all the time. They even state that on the application.

Don't know about that, one way or another, but definitely not in SXM, as they don't have TSA pre-check!

Thanks.

How much are the renewal fees? I read the FAQ and it wasn't clear how much it costs to renew each year.

The $100 fee is for five years.

TSA precheck is not guaranteed even if you have Global Entry, although we usually get it.

It took us about two weeks to be approved, and then we ran into a huge delay getting the interview scheduled. I kept checking online every day and was lucky enough to run across a cancellation. I booked that for my husband, called and got them to agree to take us both at the same time.

MJ who as many of you may know travels a lot. She has Global Entry and she went on a stretch that she did not get pre check about 4 of her 6 flights over about a month. She was not happy but not much you can do. Still nice to have and worth it, especially when you re enter the US.
Cheers,

When I travel to SXM during Thanksgiving I was "bumped" from TSA prechecked in Newark.

Have had it since the beginning and LOVE it. Great program. And you can use pre-check for domestic flights.

Even if you're in the precheck line, you can still be randomly selected for traditional screening.

...and not all the pre-check barcode scanners will read your boarding pass correctly. I alwys print them in high quality but on our flight to SXM mine scanned fine with one agent but my wife was told to go to the regular check in line 'cuz her's didn't scan (different agent)....I had her move to my agent and it scanned fine...

Also...we have had GE for a couple of years and ALWAYS had precheck stamped on our boarding passes (except for airports that do not have it)

You've been lucky. One day you'll be among the random trusted travelers who don't get precheck. One trip I had it but David didn't, so I just took his laptop with me to make it easier for him.

Neither hubby nor I have GE, but the last 4 flights I've flown have had TSA pre-check printed on mine. Go figure! I'm not sure there's any rhyme or reason to it.

I'm not sure I'm following what others are posting, but we share the same experience as you. So long as the airport has tsa precheck and we do our part by entering our passid when booking the reservation, we always have tsa precheck stamped on our boarding pass.

to the OP, global entry is worth every penny if you travel abroad and want the convenience of easy return home. tsa precheck is another amazing perk that eases the hassle of travel and long lines. when we did our application, we were not aware that amex will waive the application fee. so if you have amex platinum, you may want to look into this.

When we received our Global Entry, we were told that TSA Precheck was not guaranteed, and that random trusted travelers would be screened in the normal lines for security reasons. We've only experienced that once, but it does happen.

One more question. I've scheduled our interviews. Assuming we pass that test, how long after that until we are "in"? Our interviews are scheduled for 3/10 and we are leaving for Mexico on 3/25. Would we expect to have use of GE by then?

Mine was mailed to me after the interview, I would say it came within 5 days, quicker than I thought it would, I recall. Others leave the interview with the card in hand. I would certainly ask, once they tell you that you qualify, if you get to take the card with you that day.

Our passports were stamped and updated online immediately, while we were at the interview. The cards, which are not used for air travel, arrived a week or so later.

Good point, Todd. Your trusted traveler number needs to be on your airline profile at the time your reservation is made for precheck to apply.

I put ours in our profile after my reservations were made the same day I was approved at the interview. I then checked in to fly out same day and had precheck. Same for my wife. Our interview was six hour prior to departure to SXM. Worked just fine.

The agent told us they wouldn't stamp the passports at renewal, so they may have stopped doing it altogether. We got an email to confirm, but I actually went online when we got home from the interview, and our status was updated to approved.

Airlines often give TSA Precheck to people with a frequent flyer account or you just get lucky and selected randomly.

We love Global Entry!

TSA precheck isn't that big of a deal when I leave Detroit because the flight is so early but it's a godsend in Miami coming back.

Just to follow up on my experience - this was great. We got our approval minutes after we completed our interviews and I went onto my existing reservations and updated them with our Known Traveler Numbers.

About 3 weeks later when I checked in for boarding passes, we got TSA Precheck for the flight out of Boston and it was a *dream*. Didn't have to take anything out of our carry-ons - I usually take a large (normal) size bottle of contact solution because the smaller ones are so much more expensive. This is permitted because it's "medically necessary" but they always have to pull it out and test it with some sort of paper strip, which ticks them off and delays things (beyond the other delays and aggravations).

This time, nothing. No shoes off, no ziplock bag out. Basically just walked right through. Sheer Bliss.

On the way back through PHL (Ugh) there was *nobody* in the Global Entry line. Had a little trouble getting it to read my passport at first but it finally did. It felt great sailing by all those people.

My only problem was that I didn't get TSA Precheck on the way back. I think I have now figured out that it was because it was a US Airways code share flight and all the info that I entered for the reservation at AA.com, didn't carry over to US Air - I think.

It really would have been nice to have had this in PHL because that was kind of rough. We didn't like *anything* about that airport.

I'm sold on Global Entry and TSA PC.

No, Global Entry does NOT guarantee TSA precheck. We were told at our interview that it was absolutely not guaranteed. It's random for a reason. We've gotten it on most flights, but on one flight I got it and my husband didn't. At that point, I took all the carry-ons that had any electronics and liquids in them to make it easier for him.

Like Kim, we typically fly JFK to SXM and we, too, always seem to get TSA precheck. I hope I don't have to eat those words but I guess we've been fortunate since we don't have GE either.

I've read others who said that same thing. I find that disturbing, as it seems to defeat the purpose of the randomness of precheck. When I got it and my husband didn't, he was directed to the regular line. Based on what I've read here, I think a lot must depend on the airport.

You were lucky! Coming back from SXM I had Pre check but hubby did not. They would not let him go through with me so it ended up being a useless thing as I had to wait for him to get through. We do not have GE but lots of times I DO get Precheck. But honestly I only waited for hubby 5min, maybe 8. Not enough to really make a difference. What holds up the line are the Idiots who think they can go through with stuff in their pockets, large bottles of hair product, water bottles, etc. Sometimes we get in the wrong line- people not listening to the directions!

Three weeks ago we flew JFK to SXM on AA Business Class tickets and we were TSA Pre-approved. It was a snap at check-in right through to the gate. I assumed (??) it had something to do with the class of ticketing since we don't have GE or KTNs and we always seem to end up with it, even though we don't travel very much these days.

Coming home two nights ago, SXM to JFK on JB our tickets were also TSA pre-approved which I don't get at all since you still have to take off your shoes, etc and go through the whole drill there - but what do I know?! On the plane we were asked to complete the US C & I re-entry forms which in the past we've had to surrender after collecting our bags and immediately prior to exiting the airport at the last immigration line. For whatever the reason, the first immigration agent took DHs form and John watched him toss it in the trash along with the scanned entry pics from the kiosk. When John told me, I suggested I thought we were supposed to turn it in at the exit point so we asked an immigration officer standing nearby and he said they weren't necessary. So, if anyone knows, what is the purpose of completing the form in the first place? Just curious as it seems to me to be redundant to have you complete a form just to see it tossed without as much as a glance.

And I think our total time clearing the airport with all the C & I stuff was less than twenty minutes which included claiming our luggage and actually exiting but this was a midweek early evening arrival at JFK. If I can't find anything else to love about them, you can't help but love the JB T5 at JFK and the fact they have their own well staffed and up to date immigration hall. I don't know if we just got lucky but we had basically the same experience coming home from SXM in December. Since that's about the extend of our travels these days, it seems to me PERSONALLY SPEAKING, GE would be a waste of money for us. Any thoughts?

From what I have read Pat, the days of randomly giving out TSAPRE are over. I signed up for that program...$85, good for 5 years. I don't believe the class of ticket had anything to do with you receiving PRE.
Also, last Sat. at JB T5 JFK, they did not take my customs declaration either.

If you use the kiosks, which normally are for those with Global Entry but they also direct others to use them at certain times, you almost certainly do not have to fill out and turn in the standard blue form (CBP Form 6059B). Probably not a bad idea to fill it out anyway though even if you know you will use kiosks, just so you have thought about what you acquired while out of USA, if for some reason you get pulled for secondary screening - at least I fill one out even though we have Global Entry. Then, I just throw it away after getting past customs.

It might be that with you going to the Kiosk for the picture receipt it negates the need for the written form. Maybe the airline passes out the form for the people that don't want to use the Kiosks. Who knows.

Pat, TSA Precheck is only recognized in the US, where you're being checked by TSA, and then only at certain airports. It has no meaning at all in SXM. If you had had a connecting flight at JFK then it would have been helpful when you recleared TSA security after exiting from Immigration and Customs.

Reading her post, Pat knew that. Her question was the handing out of custom forms on the plane when there were kiosks to use.
