I knew something would happen...
      #1665871 - 10/06/15 01:01 PM (71.185.230.35)

Our passports expired last month. In early September we had new photos taken and mailed in the required form and payment. My wife has gotten her new one and the next day her old one was returned. Just this morning I got an e-mail from them stating that the picture I submitted was unusable because my glasses' frame obscured my eye area. Now I have get a new photo taken and mail it along with a copy of the e-mail. I called and was told that I had enough time, but I'm worried. We leave on Nov. 13, and I don't want to reschedule. Please, someone reassure me.

If they gave you specific instructions, I'd follow them to a tee and do the transaction via Federal Express or certified mail and I'm sure you'll be fine. Doesn't the post office have an overnight mail option, too?

They were able to do them in a ten day turn around when the rules first changed when the situation was urgent due to imminent travel dates.

You'll be find, I'm sure. (I hope?)

Just curious, in Canada you don't take the pic with glasses.
In the US, do you have passport photo's with glasses on?

Not that it helps but I just had some passport photos taken (although not for a passport) and they were very specific about not wearing glasses.

Hope everything goes smooth. Get on it right away.

Correct. My wife found that out in April when we crossed from Canada back to the US.

Try Walgreen's. They'll do the pictures while you wait. Just takes a few minutes.

Thanks, everyone, for the encouragement. I just had new photos taken, sans glasses, and will send it tomorrow - certified, return receipt requested. Elizabeth, that sounds wonderful. I'll PM you after we're there.

Perhaps the original poster had progressive lenses, that turn dark, and that was the issue. The person who took the picture should have known that was a problem, although if you go to Walgreen's, etc., you're probably talking someone making $8 an hour..

$8.00 and hour employee can be a very qualified person. Just because they are making $8 and hour doesn't make them incompetent. At least they are working, earning money and not relying on hand outs.

One of the questions on the renewal application is the date of your next trip, so they know when you need your passport. Everything has been done except for the photo, so I'm sure it will be back to you in plenty of time.

In defense of Walgreen's photodesk employees, my guy caught the darkened lenses, made me remove my glasses and then retook the pictures.

My point is that your particular guy might well have been Johnny on the spot, but for the amount of money they're getting paid, don't expect a genius...

I do have transition lenses, but we had been in the store for about 20 minutes and they were no longer darkened. My wife wore her glasses and there was no problem. Anyway, we got the pictures taken both times at Costco, and the 2nd time there was no charge. She got her new passport back in about 3 weeks, 2 weeks later I got the e-mail saying that there was a problem.

...doesn't your appearance change when you remove glasses? This action by border folks does not make a whole lot of sense. Don't think anyone would want to see my bloodshot eyes anyway.

Not yet - getting a little anxious. We mailed the 2nd picture certified mail, with an on-line receipt requested. They signed for it Fri. 10/9. We did say that we absolutely, positively had to have it by 11/6, 1 week before departure. Thanks for asking.

From the US DOS

Quote:

Can eyeglasses be worn for the photo?

Eyeglasses worn on a daily basis can be worn for the photo. However, there should be no reflections from the eyeglasses that obscure the eyes. Glare can be avoided with a slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses or by turning off the camera flash.

That said I checked my passport and I do have on transition lenses that definitely cast a yellow hue but not enough to obstruct the eye color. Pic was self taken, no flash, and printed.

We even have our middle bedroom bed loaded with things to pack - even a new item - chair pads. We found them at B,B & B, gave them a tryout on the hard plastic chairs at the Y, and give a We have a very flexible schedule while on the island and would love to meet fellow TTOLers. Maybe an informal lunch?

Are they better than the thin ones that are usually on the plastic chairs.

I can't recall ever using plastic chairs with thin mats, but these were quite comfortable on the Y's hard plastic. Hopefully they'll also help with Club O's plastic straps. One takes up about as much space as two beach towels in luggage, and we always pack way too many clothes, so space shouldn't be a problem.

I just remember how uncomfortable the blue mats at the old Bikini Beach were. My butt would always get numb. They offered no padding at all.

I'll look for the tattoo - right now I'm guessing where it's located. I have 3 - a shark on my shoulder, a gecko on my calf, a sunburst on my hip (all tropical).
