I don't have a plan yet, but after many many years of chartering in the BVI, buying my own bluewater boat, sailing across the Atlantic and along the US East Coast from RI to Bahamas I'm thinking about sailing Auspicious to BVI to visit the islands I have enjoyed so much on my own boat.
I've done the trip before on deliveries, but that wasn't on MY boat.
I'm interested in whether any other TTOL BVI folks would be interested in going along. To be clear, I'm not charging (in fact I would provide all the food for the passages). Crew would join me in Baltimore or Norfolk. We sail offshore across the Gulf Stream and then south along 65W to Tortola. The trip will take 9 - 14 days depending on wind and weather.
I might go this year after hurricane season or next - this is just a discussion. I have other sources of qualified crew but thought I would explore here first.
No passengers need apply - crew only. You have to be able to sail, including keeping the boat moving in light air. You must be able to stand a watch alone (4 on 8 off). You must be considerate of a nice boat as if it was your own. Experience on passages, even just overnight, is desirable.
Timing of the trip - in each direction - can be adjusted for the right crew.
I have 15(ish) thousand miles offshore. I cook quite well. Auspicious is a 2006 Hallberg-Rassy 40 with roller-furling jib (100 and 135), staysail, full-batten main, and asymmetric spinnaker. Generator, diesel heat, A/C (not often used offshore), fridge, freezer, EPIRB, SSB and Pactor modem, VHF, etc, etc, etc. Crew hot-bunk on saloon settee and sole forward. The v-berth is available when conditions permit but generally used for kit.
I'd like to sail Auspicious to the BVI, cruising for several weeks, and return to Annapolis. I don't have firm plans for schedule. This is a chance for folks that are really interested to contribute to planning and for everyone else to kibitz.

I would jump at the trip but the HR40 is a center cockpit and no sugar scoop to smoke on. I would get pipe ashes all over it.

Is this a "guys only" trip or can girls apply?

Glenn - rules on the boat are no smoking below or under canvas. Offshore I sail with the dodger up and bimini down. I have G&T seats aft where crew have smoke before. We might shoo you forward on a downwind leg. *grin* It's all about consideration.
Based on experience, smokers and ladies with long hair pitch in to clean the cockpit under the teak grate after landfall. It's usually not terrible. Since historically, I have been the most hirsute on board I clean the head and shower sump. *sigh*

Auspicious is a gender neutral boat. It's all about skills and experience, although personality fit is at the top of the list of requirements. I do understand that ladies may have some concerns; I can provide a few references from women who have sailed with me before if we get to that point and you still have concerns.
Anyone who specifically wants to crew should PM me with an e-mail address. I'll respond with mine - send me your sailing CV and I'll send you mine (turnabout being fair play).
Almost everything is subject to negotiation at this point, and the more qualified a candidate is the more flexible I will be.
Timing is open. Food has to be good - we are NOT talking freeze dried or canned stuff. Any crew that are foodies can certainly contribute. I usually make up a good bit of stuff ahead and freeze it and split meals between cooking homemade but frozen stuff and cooking on the fly. On recent deliveries that has included homemade lasagna, shrimp risotto, omelets, homemade soups, interesting salads, kabobs, and goulash.
I am a very very bad fisherman. If you're good at it we can troll -- I have two rod holders aft, a gaff, and can set up for a tail line. Teak decks, so we have to be a bit careful with blood.
Ye hah!

Dave,
PM on its way.
Since I don’t smoke I won’t have Glenn’s issue with pipe ash. However, he seems like such a fascinating guy I might be willing to get myself a pipe if it might aid in getting me aboard with you two .

How was your stop in Narragasnett/Pt Judith, RI? I tried to respond to your post back in March but I never heard back from you

I had a great time in RI. Point Judith is a great stop! Everyone I dealt with from the Point Judith USCG station, to the police, to Point Judith Marina were wonderful and helpful. We didn't catch many fish. Everyone caught a cold though! *grin* The family will be back as usual in October for the striped bass season. Thanks for remembering.
For the sailors in the area I added a bunch of reviews at activecaptain.com .

Ditto saildoggie.
I already have 10 days of vacation planned and paid-for this fall, which only makes the odds even more remote.
I only have about 2500 miles of offshore experience, and much of it a long time ago. Loved the night watch. I'd like to get back out there.
Oh to be independently wealthy!
