luggage ? on overnight layover in Miami
      #1524578 - 07/27/13 09:22 AM (184.91.79.224)

on our return trip from the islands we fly into Miami at 6pm but have to overnight - we depart the next day at 1:30pm in the afternoon

how does the luggage thing work?

I assume when we deplane we have to grab our luggage, go thru customs and then do we just leave the Miami airport with ALL of our luggage and shuffle off to our hotel (which I have not booked yet - suggestions?)

or after we clear customs do we get back in line and drop off our 1 toiletree bag (which is a checkin item)with the airline and then go to the hotel

thanks for all replies......as we've never had an overnight layover....ever....

My experience has been that you will get your bag back for overnight connections of more than 12 hours, whether domestic or international. If you are interested in dropping it off at the transfer desk that evening, I doubt they would give you a hard time about it. The negative about keeping the checked bag overnight is that you will have to go through a bag check line in the morning. I have not been through MIA in a couple of years, but it used to be the case that all of their lines for checkin were pretty long. Hopefully, that has improved.

We stay at the Miami International Airport hotel, which is inside the airport. It saves a lot of hassle and is very nice.

You can check bags outside at Miami for AA, so that's not a big deal at all. The overnight question, I have no idea about.

I have had to over night at Miami before and i had to clear customs and take my luggage and go through check in security etc again the following day. Mind you I was flying to Canada on a different carrier not AA although my flight from sxm to MIA was AA.

I remember at SXM they tagged me all the way to Toronto but because I was on a different carrier they told me I had to take my luggage and check back the next day on Air Canada.

My recommendation is call the airline you are booked with and ask them the question. That would probably be the safe bet to get the accurate info. I know it really varies from carrier to carrier regarding the procedure on luggage transfers ...

As has been said, if you stay at the Miami International Hotel, it's about as painless as it can be, particularly if you are flying AA. The check-in for AA is steps from the hotel lobby, unless you are flying first class, in which case it's at the other end of the concourse. But it's all still inside.

The foot at the restaurant at the top of the hotel is mediocre but, again, convenient. There are also several fast-food outlets around the corner (still inside) from the hotel lobby; Subway is the only one I remember.

The rooms at the MIA hotel are quite small. Ask for one that is as large as possible. It's not plush but is clean, and the convenience is not to be ignored.

They also give an AARP discount rate. We have stayed there many times and it is very convenient. Reasonable rates too.

Just to clarify, after you clear Immigration, you'll claim your bags upon arrival at MIA, you'll clear customs and exit the customs hall. Because you are overnighting in Miami you won't be able to recheck your bags until the following day so you'll have to take all your luggage to/from your hotel.

As others have said, there's a hotel right inside Terminal E that is just steps away from the American Airlines Check-in counters and the TSA Security Check Point. Other airline ticket/check-in counters are somewhat further away but still within reasonable walking distances. Of course, there are scores of other hotels within a few miles of the airport - almost all of which offer free shuttle service.

The times I've gotten a room using my AARP rate, they have been teensy and not at all desirable (once, next to an elevator shaft with TV that didn't work and a twin bed, for pete's sake!). When I requested the biggest room they had last month, I didn't request an AARP rate. And I got a decent-sized room.

Granted the rooms are on the small size but we have always had a Queen size bed with all the amenities in working order with the AARP rate. For one night the size of the room isn't an issue for us.

I wasn't aware of ANY hotels that offer free shuttle service here.

Can you identify some of them?

Figured it was a taxi monopoly.

Everytime I go to MIA to get to SXM I have to overnight. I always have to claim luggage and take it with me to the hotel. I have stayed at the hotel in the terminal many times and have been very satisfied. There are many hotels within a mile or two from the airport and almost all have free shuttles.

AARP - American Association of Retired People - it's a lobbying group for American's over 55 and members sometimes get discounts at hotels, car rentals, etc. - similar to "Senior Citizen" discounts.

We just did this a couple weeks ago. It is pretty much like the OP said with the whole luggage thing.

Yes, there are a bunch of free shuttles. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express Miami Springs (there are two Holiday Inns, each with their own shuttle). It's a 5-minute ride from the airport. Call the hotel to let them know you've arrived, and they'll let the shuttle driver know to pick you up. Also, if DO stay at the Holiday Inn, there is a great bar/grill right next door...literally. Tom's NFL Bar and Grill. Highly recommended. Hope that helped.

Have been this route many times. Unless things have improved you may well take over an hour to get out of customs. You will have to keep your luggage and check back in the next day. A 1:30 PM departure should be no problem in getting back to AA and checking in.
The Miami Airport Hotel is convenient and nice enough. They have a bar just around the corner from the desk that you can order food from. I recall that a number of the restaurants in the airport close fairly early, around 8? Last Fall when we came back immigration and customs was a mess. By the time we got to the hotel reception, checked in, and dropped our luggage it was fairly late. Most of the restaurants were closed so we hit the bar and the bartender was great in getting us a menu and arranging to have our food sent down. If you have much luggage, grab yourself a cart, makes lugging it around a lot easier - tho the hotel porter won't let you take a cart to the room.
