Going Nuts
      #1578892 - 03/29/14 02:51 PM (74.214.43.47)

I have been sick at home for the last couple days, and with nothing to do I have been going through some old slides.
For the life of me I cannot figure which island this is.

I know it was taken on helo flight from Aguadilla PR to Virgin Gorda in 1979, but not a clue on the island.

It appears there is one house on top the hill so I thought maybe Necker, but wrong shape totally.

Anybody know?

Looks like Culebrita to me.

Agreed. Culibrita from the NE.

Culebrita, definitely, and as Glenn said, from the NE. It's not a house on top, but rather the Culebrita lighthouse, which was quite a magnificent structure, dating back to the late 1800s. I remember climbing up the hill to visit it in 1981, and the entire complex was still very much intact. It had only been abandoned by the Navy a few years previous.

I visited again after Hugo and Marilyn, and decades of neglect (probably 2005), and most of the complex was in the process of melting into the hill. I still climbed the lighthouse itself, which had been replaced with a modern, solar-powered affair.

I'm pretty sure the light is still operating.

For anyone curious, the easier path is to walk straight up from 'Trash Beach' on the eastern side of the island.

Thanks for another trip down memory lane.

Still not 100%, but better!

Here is a bonus photo. Little Dix Bay from the Air in 1979.

Here's the Wikipedia page for Culebrita:

The map on the page looks exactly like your pic!

We just hiked up to the lighthouse on Culabrita last year.
The original lighthouse itself is no longer functional.
The light at the top is all bombed out and the iron is all rotting away, as is the stone.
This makes for an exciting climb if you want to chance it.
At 250lb I made sure I kept my feet at the edges of the rotting steel stair-treds, and not in the middle.

Here's a recent picture looking NE...
