Did you inspect the car on pickup? Did you mention the bald tires on inspection? Does your rental contract have any clauses on flat tires?

SXM??? Wendell

Call the rental company back and explain to them that the tires are bald, see what their reaction is. They may not have realized that on your first call.
Cheers and good luck,
T

Yes I inspected the car on pick up & no did not say anything about bald tires because I did not look.....contract says customer responsible for tire & rim damage....so I guess I be on the hook for removing a screw from a bald tire......lesson learned.....kate

Kate,

If this is a company you've dealt with before I would second the suggestion to call him back and have a second discussion regarding the matter.

I'm not very mechanically inclined but I would think there's a huge difference between a client ruining a rim or tire through carelessness or recklessness, and the natural evolution of a bald tire going flat, and particularly when it's a regular customer driving on the typical island roads over there.

Here on SXM we use Lesley Bruce and in my wildest imaginings I can't see him charging me for that. If I actually destroyed the tire or rim, well, that's a different story and I'd expect to be held responsible but in your situation it doesn't sound that way.

Respectfully,

pat

While having bald tires (many SXM rentals seem to have bald edges from the turning hills and potholes making the alignments off) is not good but I don't see how its related to a screw being in the tire. Unless the screw was short enough to not penetrate the tire deep enough if there was more tread.

Not taking care of this for you shows a complete lack of long-term vision. Shake you down for the tire to get fixed for a few bucks (or are they going to charge you for a $200 brand new tire?) and loose your business on future trips.
