Taipei International Airport use to have two sets of 50 caliber quad machine guns at the end the runway. When you did your flight planning you had one form that each place you went to would stamp (chop). You handed it in when planning was completed. Your "chop" would be sent to the machine gunners. If they didn't have it, as soon as you began your takeoff roll you would be hosed.
Yes Taipei was one place where I had a huge WOW. It was the only time in my life that I experienced an earthquake. I was in a high rise hotel downtown Taipei (at least the 10th floor) and could feel the room moving from side to side. I was scared sh--less and ran down the stairs as fast as I could to get outside.
When I went back inside the hotel, the folks there told me it happens all the time there.
When we got ready to leave the island, there was talk about China launching missiles over the island as a sign of threat. I was really glad to get out of there safely.
