Connecting through Chicago in January
      #1666634 - 10/13/15 11:22 AM (67.42.237.98)

I'm traveling to Florida in January for a cruise. There's a flight using miles from PDX - CHI - FLL. My question is: how risky is it to connect in Chicago in January? I know no one can predict weather, but would you do it or would you look for an alternate route?

After my experience in Chicago in May, I'll avoid that airport at all costs. Is it O'Hare? The airport code for O'Hare is ORD, so just making sure.

Well, I have no experience in January, but I'd avoid ORD like the plague.

I agree with Georgia, I live in Iowa and avoid ORD at all costs! The last time thru there (for work, I didn't book) I spent an extra 15 hrs because of thunderstorms in August.I could have rented a car and driven home, but didn't cuz they would schedule the flight then delay, etc. Snow and ice is much worse.

Been through ORD many times going and returning from SXM. Never had a problem. In fact we are returning from SXM through ORD this coming June.

Linda,

I personally have NOT flown through Chicago but it almost goes without saying, it's a known airport with lots of 'on time' issues. When I was still working our salesmen from around the country almost always hit delays when they were booked through there to come to the East Coast and a few of them just categorically refused to come to Corporate during the winter months because of all the potential weather related problems.

Again, I haven't experienced it firsthand so I'm only thinking that based on what I've been told, I'd avoid it like the plague if there are were any other possible routes in warmer winter climates. Good luck and enjoy your cruise. Lucky you.....have fun.

ORD connections are a "crap shoot" from November thru March. When I was flying a lot between the east and west coasts for work I would instruct my admin assistent to flat out refuse any connrction thru Chicago in the winter. When it is good weather, no problem...when it is bad weather...terrible.

When I HAD to change in Chicago I always had the O'Hare Airport Hilton set up for speed dial on my cell Phone so I could call from the taxiway and grab a room if I was going to miss my last connection.

I highly recommend talking with your airline and negotiating an alternate route that gets you from the Pacific Northwest to the East coast (like IAD) non-stop and then down to FLL.

We connect through ORD all the time. I always make sure we get there as early in the AM as possible and rarely have a problem. The later you get the more problems there are. Late in the day it can be a zoo with late arrivals and departures all over he place.

Thanks, everyone. I picked a different routing.
