Airliner hit by drone
      #1693601 - 04/18/16 11:56 AM (65.48.220.83)

Now, this is an eye-opener
Just crossed the screen - as an airliner was landing, a drone hit it

This will present a new challenge - could see it coming
If I was the pilot.... whew... I'd be peeved

I saw this briefly as well - I believe it was in the UK? I'm not sure what laws they have surrounding drones, but in the US, you'd be in big trouble for just flying within 5 miles of an airport.

One of the reasons I stopped flying was a situation that is similar. I was flying over Hershey Park at 10k feet doing ~200kts/hr. All of a sudden I saw this bright flash in-front of my plane, maybe ten feet or so, it hit my prop, and just disappeared. After I checked my pants, and thought about it for a few minutes, i thought it to be one of those friggin mylar balloons. during those 5-10 minutes, I did not have the facilities to handle any situation. I was in a unsafe state way beyond the initial impact.

I fly helicopters commercially now and used to fly for the Marines. My job requires me to fly at 300 ft and below so the drones are always in the back of my mind. I've had several friends hit birds and some have come into their cockpit, thankfully they were wearing a helmet and just got a little bruised.

Among the many reasons I still wear a helmet flying. I hope people start realizing that their drones can cause some major damage. I doubt they will because most people don't think of the consequences.
