I wouldn't be cancelling my trip to SXM over this( easily said by the guy going to Aruba instead of SXM in January). I would be much more proactive of applying a thorough coating of deet at all times. Be much more aware of mosquitoes around. Deet is effective but I would not rely on it exclusively. If I was out to dinner and there are mosquitoes flying around the table, I would be asking for the check to be brought promptly.
This is yet another issue(crime, food allergies, etc) for restaurants to deal with because it will have an impact on their business.
I hope both governments take this issue very seriously. When you start having US news reporting cruise ship passengers getting sick, they might find the cruise industry abandoning SXM as a port of call. I certainly hope it doesn't get that bad.
Also, as more of these sub-African diseases become global (West Nile, Dengue, and this one), I hope more attention is given to finding reliable vaccines.
