Ok, I just didn't read much about cargo arriving. Also I guess food products could have been en-route to SXM but the hurricane just postponed delivery.

It is odd that anyone has stock or much of the stock that would be needed to match a menu. Alcohol isn't much of a problem, it's the meat and bulk supplies that come into the island. Containers are backed up at the docks. There are a few main suppliers that handle the food service industry, and I cannot remember the French supplier but Im sure they might have had a bit of looting done, as has Divicos damage and looting. Merchants Market being the main supplier on the Dutch side on Orange Grove was damaged and a statement from them included this as of Sept 25th. but no updates since...

"Our St Maarten facility was hit the hardest, followed by St Thomas. The Anguilla and St Croix warehouses fared well with minimal damage. Many customers businesses were damaged/destroyed and there are curfews still in place. We are assessing each island separately to determine what needs to be done at each location to rebuild/repair so that we can return our businesses to the pre-hurricane state.
The coming days will bring all of us more great challenges.
The Merchants Market Team will be here.
Still Standing."

Some places are open but I am sure very limited in what they have for the people who had to stay behind and keep moving to rebuild what they have lost, but I would not think up to standards that most of the travelers are usually accustomed to...

Which just throws another question out there that I have, They are announcing that Nov. 1st the IGY yacht club will be open for the Yacht season. There has been an announcement of 200 sunk and or submerged vessels are in the Lagoon. Just like anything to function here, there are a chain of events that are not even in place yet for it to be totally realized what it will take.

No one has mentioned the fact that during Luis, the Govt. didn't allow any incoming air or boat traffic that wasn't not registered as a resident or owned a business until 6 months after the storm...

From sxmbeachrental agency:

So far, 8 restaurants have opened in the Simpson Beach area.
Simpson Bay Yacht Club
Toppers
Pizza del Sol
Lebanese restaurant (by Travel Inn)
Buccaneers
Sale & Pepe
Pat's (in front of Boathouse)
Italian restaurant in Puerta del Sol Plaza (across
from Toppers)

Grocery Stores
Several of the smaller grocery stores are open.
Additionally, the grocery store on the Maho corner
is serving it's hot buffet again.

They initially canceled all villa reservation for October. November status was supposed to be determined on Sept 30th. They sent a note today that will be decided later today. Looks like our reservations for November will be right on the edge on whether it's a go/no go.

Pat's (in front of Boathouse)

Are you sure about this as they had been closed or forced out of business earlier this year? Seems odd they would reopen now.

While the stores are not open yet I did receive a call from Caribbean Gems. If anyone needs service on existing purchases from them or would like to look into something, check their website, email them or call them 212-537-6529.

They hope to be back open and operational in November.

Thanks. I had no idea but this is what happens when people take information from one place, post it to another and do not verify it.

Thanks again.

PLEASE, Everyone, If you are going to post something, please verify it to be accurate.

Except for Carrefour, (which as far as I know has not reopened) most of the larger grocery stores are open, including Market Garden, Super U and Grand Marche.

And there are many restaurants in Simpson Bay which are open, which are not on that list.

Apologies if anything is incorrect, but, it was a status email from the company looking out for the villas we regularly rent from that includes property managers on site right now. Not sure how I verify info is any more correct than from a reputable company with people on the island.

..just goes to show you that your 'reputable company' maybe doesn't know that much about what is going on, on the island right now.

When it is cut and pasted from another site without verification, anything is possible. le bar de la mer has been gone for years as far as I know and I think an attempt to come back as Bistro de la mer was made. I do not think they survived but perhaps I am mistaken.

Along with Simpson Bay Resort, Atrium is also accepting people for non-tourist accommodations, citing no beach, etc.

I wonder if all the quick rebuilding was done with proper permits, the proper inspections and everything required?

I see Driftwood/Boat Bar has opened with what looks like a built structure. Again, I wonder if permits and proper building procedures where followed?

I did see where they changed their original edict, that even any REPAIRS had to have a building permit, which I guess is kind of a big deal in SXM, to get one. Theo was concerned about requiring a building permit, as was I. Now, the rule is that if you are just REPAIRING what was there and it was permitted, you don't have to have a building permit. Although truth be told, I really don't think the government at this stage has the resources to enforce this stuff at all.

Building a structure is not repairing a boat bar.

I am pretty sure it will be "any thing goes" until the government puts the hammer down. Kind of like Captain D's Rib Shack.

Not to rain on the parade......but...... who are the customers for all of these places that are "opening"??? The vast majority of the people on the island rely on the tourist industry for their income........and there are NO tourists. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

A lot of places, like Mark's, Pineapple Pete, etc., are a big percentage of locals there, who still may not have electric and/or water. From personal experience, if you don't have electric, etc, even cooking seems like a chore and it's nice to sit down and eat a meal prepared by someone else. Plus there are a lot of relief workers on island.

Agreed. Even when tourists ARE there, Mark's is probably 90 percent locals. They do a LOT of take-out business.

Yes, that is very true but if the local people are not working they won't have the money required to eat out. It is going to be very difficult for everyone there for quite some time. This is not a case of "build it,they will come".

So very true!! I have wondered also if they are not working, how will they afford to go to restaurants. Some don't even have homes. I would like to know down the road how many of these businesses are making ends meet.

Does Marty still own this?

Yes, he does. He's no longer living on the island full time, and has someone managing the restaurant for him.
