We're still 6 weeks out and I know that ferry information is constantly changing even when the BVI aren't recovering from a major hurricane. Is there any particular site that is likely to have current ferry schedules? Also, if someone is taking a ferry from Tortola to St. John, will they have to go to Red Hook, clear customs, and then take a ferry to St. John or is that process likely to be more direct in 6 weeks?

How to ride the ferry.

Get off plane, buy a painkiller, get yoiur luggage, go to the terminal and take the next ferry. You won't actually know when the next ferry runs until you get there and confirm one is running. Calling, checking schedules etc is more of a guidline. If the next ferry is more than thirty minutes out go upstairs and get another painkiller.

As for Tortola to St John. As of right now that will require a Ferry to down town St Thomas. Then a cab to Red Hook and another Ferry to St John. The one exception to this is Interisland Boat Services. Their ferry clears down town but you have the option of riding it back to Red Hook then taking a second ferry to St John.

Option three, rent your boat in St Thomas in which case the drill is get off the plane, buy a pain killer, get your luggage, take a five minute cab ride to your boat, get a pain killer at the marina, go sailing.

Go to bestofbvi.com and check ferry schedules - they are really good about updating regularly.....other than that? Jay’s advice above is the best....don’t sweat it, don’t buy tickets in advance, etc.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I agree with the ferry advice but just want to have a rough idea of what to expect.
