Me and my wife just came here to Sint Maarten for third time, today is our first day and are staying for ten more days. Can somebody give me a list of open beaches since many of them seem to be closed as we are here in Oyster Pond and the Dawn beach is closed as well. It is sad to see that Westin resort and spa is still in bad shape. Thank you!

Thank you! The Mullet bay is first on the list and it is our favorite...

Dawn beach is closed? I am not aware of any beaches that are closed? The resorts and bars on some beaches are closed or demolished but the beaches are all open.

I think they want to know what beaches have chairs, food or facilities.

Went to friars yesterday-Monday at 12:30. Beach empty, lounge chairs stacked, and restaurant closed.

They could be closed on Monday. Or closed for vacation. 'Tis the season.

There have been a couple reports on Cruise Critic that Dawn Beach is so closed off that there is no easy public access from the land side. One cruiser said that they took a taxi there but could not figure out how to get to beach. I do not know about the accuracy of these reports.

Dawn beach has always been like that. And if you do find a parking spot, some nasty person comes and chases you off. We avoid it.

Yes, YEARS ago, way before Irma, you could park without too much problem and go to Ms. B's for ribs, but that was a long time ago. Personally, we haven't been to Dawn Beach in probably 10 years.

I do not remember when we last went to Dawn - it has been at least a few years - but we have gone almost every year to Oyster Pond to take a snorkel trip with Capt Alan. When last at Oyster Pond to snorkel with Capt Alan in February (off ship - have not done land vacation there this year for first time in a long time), I think that we could have walked through ruins of Mr. Busby's to beach - but we did not do that and I am not sure what was there at the time. I am wondering if there now (or maybe in February too) is fencing up that pretty much blocks off beach access across both beach halves of Dawn.

First of all, walking and driving around Sint Maarten and seeing what happened to an island hurts me deeply and my heart goes to all the people who suffered trough this tragedy.

As far as the beaches, we went to three of them so far and Friar's bay was closed on Monday and no chairs or fascilities provided. Today we went to Orient bay beach and was in shock when I saw what happened there, all the destruction. There is an only one beach bar that was opened and we could rent the chairs, later went for drinks as by 12:30 pm afternoon we were only people on the beach as far as the using it. I understand that weather was moody with the showers throughout the day but it was sad to see an empty beach and everything being swept away with only one buisness opened which was as mentioned Bikini beach bar.

However, on our second day on SXM which was Sunday, I went to my favorite beach Mullet bay and place was packed. Luckily we get up after 6am in the morning so we got there around 9am. Beach was beautiful and we could rent the chairs as well. Also they were selling the food there along with drinks. It was probably due for being a Sunday which attracted many locals and others as well. Great vibe and excellent time.

More to come as we are hitting different beach every day...

Mkart--It is no surprise that Mullet was busy on Sunday, as it is a big local day to go to the beach. Enjoy the rest of your trip and please do post more about your stay.

@ Carol Hill - will post more infos about our stay in the upcoming days

@ Snorkeler - we are staying in Princess Heights Luxury Butique apartments in the Oyster Pond which are overlooking West inn beach resort who is demolished and scheduled to be opened this November but highly doubt it by seeing all the damage to it and they are still in the clean up stage. I asked about the Dawn beach and was told that it is not opened as far the fascilities goes. As we sit in our balcony on the 6th floor and overlooking the beach, we can see that it is not cleaned up and approachable. We asked on the reception and were confirmed this as well.

So, there was lot of missleading infos about the beaches. The whole island is about one third of the full capacity once was. It will probably take three to four years to have it fully restored.

This question, I guess, is for the people who have already visited the open beaches....Do you feel confident that there is no debris such as metal or glass still washing ashore? Do you feel safe walking on the beaches and in the water that you're not going to step on debris? TY

We swim at different beaches 3 or 4 days a week. Never a problem.

The best way to access Dawn Beach would be through Oyster Bay Beach Resort.
