Many many years since I have been to SXM... thinking of going back this Fall...

I had fun fishing in the Salt Pond in town and wonder if that is still possible and if the little Tarpon are still there?

Any info would be most appreciated...

Thank you..

frank

Hello Sir ,
But you haven't been back a very long time. That pond is totally meshed up .
The only fishing that you can would be in the sea in general and by the Simpson Bay Bridge.
But , yes , I can recall what you are referring to. Sad but rough reality.

Thank you for the replies... it is sad to hear that the pond is much worse.. it was bad back then...

and NO I would not eat anything caught in the pond.. I am catch and release anyway but surely nothing in the pond is edible..

So I will search on... and see if I can find more info.. again thank you for taking the time to help me..

You may be right. The 5 foot one I caught was filleted real quick with lime juice squeezed on it (butter & garlic I do not know about) and placed in a 5 gallon white pail. I heard they had a barbecue on the beach.

The smaller Tarpon they say have too many bones. I do not consider myself a fisherman but enjoy them in SXM. Some locals will eat them but I doubt out of the salt pond.

Never ate the Tarpon because of the amount of bones. At Snoopy Bar has an enclosed area with a lot of them. They do look great in the water.

And if I’m thinking of the same fish, they are are HUGE. We used to watch them off the deck at Boca Marina and I think it was Lee’s, too, where they used to feed them. The fish would come right up, almost to the edge of the dock to get whatever food it was the staff was throwing in the water for them. Again, they were really big fish maybe three to four feet on average, or at least that’s what they looked like to me. We always heard they were a fun catch but best to catch and release, and because of their bony nature they really weren’t a great dinner catch.

Respectfully,

pat

Yup..a table by the water at Lee's...leftover french fries tossed in and these beasts would swarm and churn the water. Also on the SB bridge next to the Yacht Club restaurant at night the lights draw them in and they ARE huge....No more Lee's but we still have the bridge wink

I've seen locals fishing off the rocks near the bridge but can't say I've seen them catch anything
