Heading to Anegada first week of March for a couple of days. When visited last time, we took a tour with Teamwork Charters (awesome!). This time we want to explore the beaches on the north side. What are your recommendations for doing this? Booking an island tour? Renting scooters? Thanks

Rent a jeep instead of scooters; save yourself medivac trip to Tortola. In a day you can check out Cow Wreck, Anegada Beach Club, Loblolly and Flash of Beauty.

There are lots of other great spots to see long the North shore if you can find them.

We enjoy renting the Mokes! They seat up to 4 people and are a blast to drive around the island!

Sadly the New Mokes are not as good as the old ones...but loads of fun nonetheless. I would totally back Jason and avoid scooters..too many nasty accidents on roads that quickly turn to sand and gravel..BTW sidenote: You can get 8 people in/on a Moke...I cruised mine around Southern Spain while on a working vacation and promoting a night club. We would have four girls in bikinis sitting on the side pods as we cruised..not soo safe but hey it was the 70"s!!! Wish I still had my 1965 Moke..did over 100, 000 miles in it!!

Thanks. Definitely won't do scooters. Love the idea of the Mokes.

Scooters and sand result in more early vacation terminations than anything else I have noted in my years. Broken collarbones and broken wrists are not boat friendly!

Having travelled the Anegada roads I would also avoid scooters. Just an accident waiting to happen.

I will also chime in and say avoid the scooters. I have witnessed several bad road rashes. As for the Mokes, I may be wrong on this. But I thought they were not allowed on that stretch from Loblolly to ABC. Not correct? I have never used a Moke as Dean supplies a jeep with our rental. The ride from Loblolly to ABC is an adventure I have to do every trip to Anegada. It just feels like you have the whole island to yourself.

Totally agree.
Inexperience + sand +2nd passenger + sand/rocks/imperfect roads+ alcohol = Disaster

Unfortunately broken collarbones/wrists are not the worst thing to happen. Several years ago, a charterer riding a scooter(I don't think alcohol or 2nd passenger a factor) but she fell, hit head> seizures>to hospital(Tortola) >>>flight to USA (Boston??). I believe she died.

Much better to rent Moke or truck with benches(easy to drive around island at speeds less than 30mph). Enjoy Anegada and don't be a sad story on TTOL.

Highly recommend Dean Wheatley! He'll meet you at the Anegada Reef Hotel (dingy in from the mooring field), take you to his office to pick up a car/truck. When you're finished you can leave it at the hotel, keys under the mat (fill it with gas before you leave it or we leave $10 under the floor mat). Cost was $95 for the day for a truck last month.

Be sure to stop by Tipsy at Cow Wreck and check out Anegada Ann's new bar! She stole my favorite Smuggler's beach bar chef from Tortola so the food is great too!

I can't wait. We missed their opening day by one day. But the place is absolutely beautiful. She has posted some pics on IG since opening. Looks like a lot of fun.

Ann has not been at Cow Wreck for nearly 2 years. "Tipsy" is her own new place, just up the beach from the old Cow Wreck. There is no business connection between the two.

The no business connection might be a understatement.

Whatever you do, get the lobster BLT at the Anegada Beach Club. We actually went to Anegada just so I could get one. Chef used to cook at what is now Sugarcane on VG, ages ago. Golden age, when Giorgio’s was on the beach near Savannah Bay and had lobster pizza and I could get a lobster BLT at the other place.

But, Ann is still the proprietor of Ann's Guest Houses?

Yes, Ann is the proprietor of the guest houses. She and Andrew still own the gift shop next to Cow Wreck. If you look at the Cow Wreck beach website it only shows information and photos of the guest cottages. Last month it was weird that someone tried to put up a barrier between the Cow Wreck bar and Ann's gift shop. I got the impression from Ann that the split wasn't totally amicable.

No it was not...we there just before they publicly split and there was a noticeable coldness between them, Hopefully time heals that.

That someone was Bell. She fenced off the gift shop, and would scream at anyone who tried to get through the fence. She also had the gift shop's power connection removed from the BVIEC mains. The gift shop is now running on a portable generator.

Thanks for the reassurance CottageGirl! And yes, certainly a shame it has come to this, must make for awkward working conditions ... not to mention living conditions. Come to think of it, our last time at Cow wreck - March 2020 as they were closing the islands down - we could see a strain in the relationship then.

I have no clue as to why there was a falling out within the family (family businesses?), but it happens everywhere.

On last visit, the fence that had been put up between CWB and Gift shop was "opened" up to allow access between the 2 places.

I heard that Belle had put up the fence and recently opened it up.

Hoping family able to heal, even while operating their separate businesses. (Have seen similar in USA).

Hey guys - will be looking to get to Anegada for a day for our up coming sailing trip and want to either rent a truck for 6 or a "Moke" - unfortunately don't know what a Moke is? Also what would be the cost of taking a taxi to and from Cow wreck for 6 vs renting a vehicle that could fit 6... TIA!

If you only want to go to Cow Wreck, a taxi will be slightly less expensive than a truck that can carry 6. The down side of a taxi is that you only get one destination and are more or less stuck with a scheduled pick up. A vehicle gives you flexibility.

By the way, if you are going to Cow Wreck, take a right at Ann's Cottages on the way in and go to Tipsy. A nicer place with better food and drinks, great service, and lower prices.

"The Feud" had been building for quite a while. Regardless, we will split our time with both on the next trip. Cow Wreck is still a beautiful spot and Tipsy's is a step up. I wish both well and hope that wounds are healed in short time.

We did see Walker when we stopped to see Ann. Walker hasn't changed a bit and nor should he. I was good to see him.

Having just been there, I would recommend you plan ahead. All the locations were sold out of mokes and jungle trucks (benches on back of pickups). We got a vehicle and were good to go, but if you want open air definitely plan ahead.

We had a reservation, but due to a flight complication had to change our date on Anegada and couldnt re-book since they were sold out.

You can reach out to ARH through facebook. They were very responsive.

I would also ask for a gas moke. The electric ones suck.

You can put 4 people in one Moke. If you have 6, you would need two or as you suggested a truck with benches. Mokes are more fun. Anegada Reef Hotel rents the Mokes. Think little open air Jeeps. I would still suggest a rental and visit multiple locations throughout the day. Yes, Cow wreck is great, but there is more to Anegada than one small section of beach. Walk by Cow Wreck and go to Tipsys. Better service and nicer place.

You can also rent Mokes from Amazing Rentals - 284-346-5658 or 284-496-9699 or ms.faulkner@hotmail.com.

Any idea if you can squeeze 3 small kids in the back of a moke? 2 mokes for a family of 5 seems like a stretch, for instance a golf cart for a family of 5 is no problem but Mokes seem more substantial than golf carts. Thanks for the intel!!

I've seen 5 adults in a Moke. Pretty tight. But doable.

Last two times we rented from Anegada Reef Hotel, they were very clear they only allow 4 people in a Moke. In December, they rented us a 4 door for about the same price. I wouldn't want to try putting 3 people (even kids in the back of a Moke. They are bucket seats and the "middle person" would be extremely uncomfortable.
