Is anyone aware of the status of building on Moskito island, can we still go there to the high water mark?

We were just over there in June. We took the dinghy over to the beach in the cut, and nobody bothered us.

That's Richard Branson's new house being built on Moskito, overlooking North Sound.

One can still land at the main beach (I think it's called Hay Point Bay.) It's the one just before Anguilla Cut as you approach from the SW. If you land elsewhere, ie the main dock for the old Drake's Anchorage Resort, signs will direct you to the left and ONLY the left.

Practically speaking, you can wander the island, and probably won't be hassled. Just stay away from the active construction sites. If you want to get to Honeymoon Bay, you'll have to judge whether it's better to approach from the east or the west....or scrap the plan entirely (depending on the active construction).

Just don't be too intrusive and you'll be fine.

Not my pic, but that's what you see upon entering Colqahon Reef channel from the outside, near the first channel marker.

Saw that every day from where we stayed on our recent vacation. Figured it was some rich guy's fancy house being built.

Branson is developing Moskito as an up scale eco-resort. He has construction going on all over the east end of the island.

That is a pretty big building out on the point.

It's hard to tell without some comparison for size.

A couple of weeks ago we saw half a dozen workmen walking around on the roof and they looked tiny.

It seemed to be the size of a very large house or a small hotel... two levels at what might be 3000-4000 square feet per level.

Uggh, they're going to build every square inch of the BVI before too long, aren't they?

Rob, Thanks for answering the question. I am still having trouble visualizing the location. Been there a hundred times and for what ever reason can't quite place where the picture was taken from or the location of the buildings. The picture must be from inside the reef?
Oh well I will be there soon enough to have a look myself.

Outside the reef, the point near the rocks at the entrance to North sound. Looks across at Necker.

Branson is developing a strip between the old Drakes Anchorage and the eastern point above Honeymoon Beach. What is in that picture is less than half of what is going on. Check out the latest google earth image. No way this is just his new residence. He is still rebuilding the main house at Necker and said from the beginning that Moskito will be an eco-resort.

too dang busy yesterday to respond to this, the photo's were taken as we neared the 1st set of channel markers entering north sound, the reef and markers are to the left of the photo's. The white dots in the distance on the far left of top photo are BEYC villas and the bottom photo has Leverick in background.

I think that Necker is finally finished, or close thereto. I have been told that the buildings on Mosquito are to be a family compound.

I was told the same and that the "eco-resort" idea has been scrapped. He divided the rest of the island into private lots for development and has sold all of them. I guess time will tell! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

I was told by a local that "all beaches" in the BVI are public, we were talking about Necker and he said I should go, and if anyone said anything to tell them that all beaches in the BVI were public... Is this true?

I believe the law states that all beaches are public to the high water (tide) mark.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but... I love Honeymoon Beach on Moskito and was wondering if there is any access from the water (dinghy) or would I have to hike around the island to get there. I don't want to intrude on Sir Richard, but getting back to Honeymoon Beach would be awesome.

From our home at Leverick Bay, we look directly across to Mosquito. The photos that have been posted are of Sir Richard's family compound.
The eco-resort plan was scrapped. Instead, and I think that I have this right, the remainder of the island was divided into six lots that have been/will be sold for $3 million each.
I think that is far better than building a Scrub Island like resort. North Sound will continue to be largely undeveloped because of what Sir Richard is doing and because Prickley Pear is almost entirely a National Park.
The roads that have been cut in next to Leverick are a much more worrisome.

Honeymoon Beach is only accessible by water. As the island is privately owned, you would be trespassing if you tried to set foot anywhere past the high water mark.

Not sure I would do it in a small dinghy. A 15' to 18' R.I.B. would be fine, provided the wind and weather permits, but I think I'd pass if all I had was a 10' or 12' dinghy.

Be prepared to be stared down though as Sir Richard's compound overlooks that itty-bitty beach. Going past the high water mark is a definite no-no.

Thanks for the replies... it looks like Honeymoon Beach will remain a wonderful memory, as the dinghy is small with only a 9hp outboard. I visited North Sound from the late 1970s and loved that spot. I guess I'll have to pay attention the next time there's an island for sale...

Mike, is the road to the left of Leverick facing the water? If so, we saw that being cut last year and was wondering what was up?

Villas will be built west of Mooney Bay. The docks are already in.

Hi Rick, hope you guys are doing well. We just got back.
Facing the water, to the left, the road and cutbacks are intended for belongers. One house is currently under construction.
The next area over is Mooney Bay where a small resort was being planned. The last we heard, the project was scaled back. That's why we were suprised to see that a road is being cut in from the west.
As Tradewinds said above, it may be for villas, we just haven't heard any details.
