I remember reading somewhere that there was a change of ownership here, and now they don't even have a website. Does anyone know what is going on there and if they are even still open and if the quality and service is still the same? Thanks in advance for your replies......

When we ate there in May it was very good and they were in full operation.

There are reviews on Tripadvisor as recent as yesterday (18th) so I guess they are still open. Hope so anyway as we love this restaurant.

I was there two days ago to do a take out... John is no longer the owner but nothing has really changed...

It is a Canadian who owns the place now but the kitchen staff ... Wait staff are all the same... I did a shrimp Pad Thai take out and it tasted the same as before. Still very good and yummy

Thanks
Jeannie

Thanks everyone for your input, as I was worried that it might have changed when the ownership changed.

Panlaan is indeed still open and has a really cool covered area now to protect from the elements.

FYI

their website: http://www.panlaansxm.com/
and! if you follow them on facebook they have weekly specials where you can get discounts by mentioning the post facebook.com/panlaanthai

This is one of my favorite places in the world. I literally ate there 10 times during a 5 week trip in 2013. I was there in November, after the ownership change, and everything was still wonderful.

If you liked Panlaan, try Avantika, also located in Simpson Bay. It is owned and operated by John, the original owner of Panlaan. Also the original chef and almost all the waitstaff are now working at Avantika. We had a wonderful meal there in November and several friends also dined there at different times and were totally happy with the excellent food and service.

Hello All ,

I just want to clarify my post as you can see was made in August og 2014 when Jon has just sold the restaurant to the current owners... At that time many of his staff were working there but as I understand things have changed now...

I just want to clarify that this post was made in August 2014

Thanks
Jeannie

I could be totally wrong here, but it's my understanging that John's wife/partner was the chef at PanLaan and still is there...there was some type of split and so he opened Avantika. But I just ate at Panlaan a week ago, it is still there and still just as wonderful...

Patty, John told us in November that the chef and waitstaff came with him when he opened Avantika. That is as much as I know about that arrangement. We had the same waitress at Avantika that we had the previous year at Panlaan. That I do know for certain, as we chatted for some time the evening we dined there. After chatting with John, we decided against dining at Panlaan during our November trip. Glad you enjoyed your dining experience there recently.

Where in Simpson Bay is Avantika located?

It's on the second floor of the Puerta del Sol building.

We were told by Greg at The Palms to go to Avantika, that yes, it's the original owner of Panlaan. I will try it on my next trip

I know it's one of the same owners, it's the cook I'm questioning...but it doesn't matter as long as BOTH places are good - and I LOVE the location of panlaan...no view at Avantika
