We have a trip planned for April. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Groovin.gif" alt="" />

Our dr suggested we each get a hepatitis A shot and a Typhoid shot prior. Has anyone else heard of this or did you do it?

Thanks.

We've been to SXM 36 times over the last 21 years. I've never done this or even heard of it. Some posters on here have an even longer history. Let's hear what they have to say. --sxmdoc

The CDC does recommend typhoid and Hep A immunizations for travel to St. Martin but:

Quote
Typhoid vaccine is recommended for those planning an extended stay in rural areas or expecting to consume potentially contaminated food. Typhoid is uncommon in most Caribbean countries. Most travelers do not require typhoid immunization.

Hep A same issue....

If you are staying where most tourists stay and eating where most tourists eat then I would infer that the immunizations are a bit overzealous.

I was a member of a Federal International Medical Disaster response team and we would require those (and more) vaccinations for an imbedded response BUT I have been going to SXM for MANY years and have never heard of ANYONE needing (or getting) immunized before a vacation trip.

Our Dr. Recommended hepatitis A and B TwinRix) you only have the vaccine once and are protected for life. Tetanus should be given once every 10 years whether you travel or not. Just as a precaution. Better safe!

Ilff2,

We've been traveling at least once and many years twice a year to SXM since 1973, probably an easy 60+ trips, and I've never had any special shots and/or vaccinations and I've never had any issues there with health matters. We drink the resort and local water routinely and haven't had THAT problem either. Thank God!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Respectfully,

Had the TwinRix vaccination and would recommend it for anyone doing a lot of travel.

My doctor suggested the Hepatitus vaccines (will get it next visit). We both make sure our tetanus is up to date. We went in November 2014 shortly after the hurricane and there was lots of debris in the water that could be dangerous if not up to date on the tetanus. Plus, walking barefoot most of the time is a risk. I got a huge splinter in the bottom of my foot one trip (from walking on the deck at the Perch) that required a trip to the French Side clinic. I was glad I was up to date on my shot.

Keeping up to date with your tetanus status is standard healthcare for anyone...traveling or not.

Hep A/B immunization should also be standard but definitely considered if traveling.

Always better to be safe than sorry especially if you plan are travelling a lot to different destinations. Some of the shots take a few months to complete so if you don't have enough time before your trip this time, you can get them upon your return and you will be all set for travel in the future.

Your doctor is being proactive and that is a good thing. He wants to keep you healthy!
