Christmas/NYE parties? - 12/17/2015 01:53 PM

Good Morning--
For those who are in SXM for the holidays, does anyone know of any events or get togethers? Thanks!

Papaguyos at Club Orient has a "double Buffett", land and sea with appetizers @7:30 and dinner Buffett @ 9pm. Also music with dancers for €120. It sounds expensive, but their Thanksgiving Buffett was huge and very good. Oh, and you don't have to worry about what you wear.

For Christmas eve, I have heard about a caroling party held at Mary's Boon. Don't really know anything about it though.

As far as NYE, traditionally there are fireworks at Philipsburg and at Maho and at Orient. I have heard that for this year, the guy from Lal's is trying to organize a fireworks display over the Lagoon, so that the bars and restaurants in Simpson Bay can get in on the action for NYE. I don't actually know the status of that, whether he got enough money to do it or not.

I've never been to it, but Palm Beach has one as well.

I've never been to any of them either, haven't been on island for NYE since the Millenium, (which we spent at Papagayo's, which was GREAT!). We had to leave to go home on NYE last year. The parties on Orient at Waikiki, Palm Beach, etc., sound fabulous, but they are pretty pricy. Can't remember the price, but something like 350 E per couple. Not sure it would be worth it to me, personally, as I often don't even make it through till midnight.

That is pricey, and I'm thinking they're going after a younger crowd than I, lol.

On New Year's eve, Orient Beach features one of the biggest fireworks displays in the Caribbean.

A fabulous beach front (under cover) dinner party at Wakiki Beach Bar for $200 Euros per person (food included/ drinks extra) starting at 8 PM. Reservations required. After dinner there is a huge beach party with music and fireworks called the Mega Party.

For Papagayo?? To me, that's a lot, if it's a buffet...

Guess I was low on my cost estimate at Wakiki! 200 E per person, PLUS drinks???

It includes shrimp, oysters, smoked salmon, seafood salad, crab back etc for appetizers. Lobster tail, Beef Tenderloin, Lamb Chops, Stuffed Chicken etc. for main meal and several desserts. It does sound like a lot, but it does include entertainment (The Island Band with Ricky The Fox and the Foxy Dancers) and is in line with other places on the Island.

Hi Carol,

We were invited to Waikiki last year, our son's good friend & his family from NYC, come every year, they had a table for 20. We didn't dine, the private area was loaded with older people, the other section was full of young people. We actually snuck back into the younger section as it was more fun. Dancers on tables, same old, same old.

Then to Palm which had a party after midnight with dancing. No dining. We will be babysitting this year. Champagne at home this year.

Merry Christmas to you & Eric. Happy New Year!

My one piece of advice for New Year's Eve is to get reservation for that night somewhere. Almost everywhere is by reservation only and do not serve dinner until quite late. We decided to wing it one New Year's Eve and had a hard time finding a place to eat.

Here's a note for some of the old timers.
We've spent the holidays in SXM for most of the past 25 years we've been going there. A long time ago, the Greenhouse offered (and advertised) free drinks to anyone who showed up nude on New (or "Old" as they used to phrase it)Years eve.
Even though they back pedaled to say it was just a joke a day or two before, they had some folks show up naked to a packed house.

I saw on Facebook where Lal is advertising for the lagoon fireworks display on NYE. It's being funded by donations of spare change which have been collected at various bars and restaurants over the year, and any excess funds will be donated to local charities.

He was excited about his plan when we were there in 2014, but I wasn't sure if it had actually materialized, as I didn't see any of the donation cans while we were there this past November and December. Apparently it worked out!

Re: Christmas/NYE parties? - 12/29/2015 01:17 PM

I saw in the Daily Herald yesterday that there were fireworks permits issued for P'burg, Maho, Simpson Bay and also Cupecoy, so there are also supposed to be fireworks somewhere in Cupecoy. With fireworks in Simpson Bay (or more likely the lagoon), and apparently also in Cupecoy, looks like there will be a couple more options to see fireworks this year, without necessarily spending big bucks.
