Carrefour in Cole Bay - 12/31/2015 12:36 PM

What does everyone think of the change to Carrefor from Grande Marche? Any real changes or pretty much the same store. Also, does anyone know if they take Euros and at about what rate?

I be able to tell you in a little over a week <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

...but I would never think of using Euro on the Dutch side.

I think it's an improvement. The prices on many items are actually cheaper than back home in NYC especially if you buy the store brand. Nice selection as well.

One caution: If you buy a case of water, they charge you for the bottle (@ 24) Expensive way to buy water@

I have run into that at other places also when buying pop and beer.

Is the the "charge for the bottle" a returnable deposit? I never noticed a deposit on other drinks.

They do accept Guilders,Dollars and Euros. We have seen all of them accepted.

I am on the Island now and have shopped there several times over the last month. Have found the prices to be better then before and the quality much better very happy with them.

I personally doubt it as some places do (or try to) charge for individual bottles/cans even when purchasing a case lot.

Yesterday we bought a case of beer and a case of diet coke and were charged the case price

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 12/31/2015 09:21 PM

If it it priced by the case (beer) then that is that. If it (water) says 1.25 a bottle and you buy a case then all bets are off...

Glad it's a item pricing thing and not a deposit

That is my interpretation but it is something to watch at all stores.

NO. It was 1.28 per bottle, times 24. She scanned the individual bottle.

I have found that the small Chinese markets have very good prices on bottled water.

Cases of beer is sometimes substantially less at the smaller markets.

Agreed.. and that is what I said (and pretty close with that $1.25 guess I will say).

If it says $1.28 PER BOTTLE then, well, it is $1.28 per bottle. If it says $18 per case then that is the price for the case.

I may be in the minority here but it kinda makes sense.

There is one right across from the Atrium that used to have decent case beer prices.

I agree, they can sell however they want, and I probably was in too much of a hurry to read the signs well. Just wanted to alert others so they would not make the same mistake. I also found the small supermarkets to have water and beer at reasonable case prices.

By the way, on SXM, we always buy six of the large bottles, and a couple smaller bottles and refill them. It's a lot cheaper that way.

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 01/01/2016 01:56 PM

Yup, same here. My better half gets those huge bottles..maybe 2 1/2 gallon jobs and does the refill thing

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 01/01/2016 02:29 PM

Here at home, we have a water cooler deal, with the 5 gallon jugs, but on SXM, we go with the liter bottles.

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 01/01/2016 03:40 PM

We tend to buy a couple of liter bottles, and fill them from the tap. We stay in a bungalow that is right under the owner's house, so I'm pretty sure the tap water from his cistern is pure and healthy. In any case, we've had no health issues from doing this over the years.

We use Brita plus a Steripen UV to treat our water in Mt Vernon.Beats carrying water.

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 01/02/2016 03:56 AM

Unless something changed at mont Vernon we drank the tap water with no issues for several years they were an all inclusive hotel. They have a huge desalination plant there.

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 01/02/2016 05:09 AM

I meant St martin for the desalination not just mont Vernon

Re: Carrefour in Cole Bay - 01/02/2016 12:36 PM

We were in Simpson Bay, in past years we would drink the tap water also, but this year the water did not taste good, so we opted for bottled water.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful answers. I just had some left over euros and thought we could just us those to buy some groceries. Canadian to US exchange is killing us poor Canadians right now.

If you have euros, I'd use them on the French side to maximize their value.
