Blip in the airfare rates

Blip in the airfare rates - 09/07/2016 07:20 PM

On Saturday, I booked AA from DTW for $332 round trip. It's been double that for years, and it's already back up to $675. Found the reduced price on my Hopper app.

Once in a while it pays to be at the right place at the right time.

The crazy prices were discussed in this thread as well: http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/s...e=0#Post1706854

I feel like an idiot because I saw the DTW thread (I'm only a few miles from that airport) but didn't click on it for several days and missed all the cheap flights. I could have pulled the trigger on a sxm trip with that kind of savings but will probably just travel in the states this winter.

I think we can define the "right place/right time" as not being during high season and not Saturday or Sunday. We've seen a little drop for these flights but not a major reduction like the low season/weekday flights.
Airlines are very familiar with timeshare vacations.

Somewhat but many cities, especially most cities NOT on the East coast experience air fares much higher all year round.

Wow. I thought I did good for 3/12 with a non- stop one way rate with one bag for 238!!

When do you all find to be the cheapest days of the week to fly? We usually stay 10 days flying a Wed to Fri and go in low season usually between April & August. TY

Generally speaking the cheaper days are mid week. But then you options are less also. Depends on where you are leaving from and the options available, connections, etc. More competition on Saturday and Sunday, but not always the cheaper fares. Too many variables.

For what specific dates? I am not seeing anything close to that fare.

I subscribe to airfarewatchdog, so get daily alerts for CLT to SXM fares. I got an alert Sunday for $337pp round trip and lots of available dates. Booked for a 10 day stay end of May/beginning of June 2017. Lowest price now is $742pp.

For what DATES, though? I have friends that normally travel out of Cincinnati and couldn't find anything cheap, earlier today..

I'm hoping they come back. Kind of doubt it this time.

Air fare from western Canada was totally ridiculous this year so far... Watching for the past 2 months and it's steadily goes up.... I should've bought the tickets back in June for just over $800 but we hadn't Finland the rental deal. Now they are over $1260....

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/08/2016 07:28 PM

A lot of the cheap fares on AA ended late Monday night. As I previously stated in another thread, on Monday morning I booked AA out of Atlanta, departing on 1/30/17 and returning on 2/28/17, for $387.00 pp. Later that night the sale ended and the fare was $761.00 pp. Today, the fare on AA is $672.00. You just have to continue to look for a good fare, and jump on it when you find it.

I check almost daily and sometimes multiple times a day. It must be just a very few select cities and dates as I have not seen anything under $700 from DAY or CVG.

Try clearing your cookies before checking again. Your previous checks might be part of the pricing algorithm.

Thanks, but I have done all of that. This is not my first rodeo after 25 years of visits.

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/08/2016 10:40 PM

Totally OT but I am looking for fares to CDG next summer and have been getting $1500-1900 r/t form BOS. Yesterday I found some $738 n/s fares. Didn't have my rentals confirmed so didn't book. They are gone today....just have to be in the right place at the right time....it becomes a game

That's the thing I don't get. Airfares from Miami are almost always sky high...

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/09/2016 02:20 AM

I stand corrected. Our flights out of Harrisburg for Dec/Jan dropped $268/ticket today.
Tough part is Delta charges $200/ticket to make change. $68 voucher per ticket is better than nothing.

On airfare watch dog , can you get alerts on RT tickets? I only see an option for OW.

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/12/2016 06:13 PM

$434 US from Thunder Bay via Toronto late Oct to mid Nov,via Westjet. It always seems cheaper than any of the US locations.

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/12/2016 06:14 PM

Have not used airfare watch dog but have learned that lowest fares often include overnights, or multiple, lengthy connections that often eat up the savings.
I do have an update to our situation with Delta. Lisa called Delta Customer Service again and the result was that they erased the earlier "solution" to price drop and upgraded us to Comfort+ seats and increased $ vouchers.
Moral?: Sometimes calm, polite attitude is rewarded.

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/12/2016 06:35 PM

Correct....low fare notice does not usually equate to usable low fare alert but it's better than nothing. Reminds me to check 'em all again

Re: Blip in the airfare rates - 09/13/2016 08:05 PM

approx a month ago, we got a direcct flight out of Toronto for 666.00 taxes in return. early morning departure exactly what we like so we are in our condo by noon, with groceries and booze,,and at a beach somewhere by 3! We in the past paid as high as 900 per person. So, this is a deal. The lowest we ever got was in 2014 for 547.00 return. Always a direct flight, do not like to waste time. Will be landing in SXM on Jan 7, 2017....can't wait.
