Restaurant Menu's? - 03/29/2017 07:13 PM

Has someone created a post with restaurant menu's? I have gone to some websites but not all places have a website. Just want to know in advance which restaurants will be safe for food allergies. Thanks

Would it be easier to make sure you tell the manager what foods you can not injest? You know what to stay away from, so order the later.... Even looking at what they serve does not really help, as you do not know what it is prepared with. just let them know

Unfortunately it's not that easy......if they serve peanut sauces too risky that it can be cross contaminated. Also if any places fry things with nuts in their oil its a no go.

It's going to be a tough nut to crack. Excuse the pun. Just because you communicate what you can an can't have to the wait staff doesn't mean it will translate to the cook.

How about peanut snacks on the plane? Is that a problem?

Exactly!!!!! We will have to avoid any restaurants that even have nuts on the premesis. It's too risky, most people don't realize how deadly nut allergies can be. We hate that he lives in fear but are thankful he doesnt have much worse.

Yes it actually is. We are the family who gets snarky looks from passengers within 6 rows in front or behind us. Luckily they don't serve peanuts in the shell as those create so much dust.

Do you think our resort The Villas at Simpson Bay Resort & Marina will have menu's for the restaurants in Simpson Bay?

Yes, but they may be outdated. Many restaurants have a chalk board and menus change often. Have you asked the resort?

As a restaurant owner, it would be best to be present and express your concerns. I would not rely on online menus as they might not describe the actual ingredients.

Most airlines serve the nut free snack when they give out those little free packets but when we travel first class they serve the warm nuts in a dish which we like. I can imagine that could pose a problem if he were to walk up through FC or traveling FC.
Then there are the passengers like us that always pack nut snacks too. I feel for your predicament.

Nope. Just added a "joker". Not a big deal but a quote should be a quote and the OP's situation is not a joking matter.

Not you. Sail2wind changed it and that is who it was directed to. I really hope everything works out for you. I have a niece with the same allergy. Not as severe as your son but just the same it is something that has to be dealt with and when they come to dinner or at a family gathering everybody respects it and cooks accordingly.

Any idea how current that list is? I see one restaurant listed that has been closed for some time now.

uhmmm.
Again. talk to the source... if you have to talk to the cook, or make sure someone expresses your concern about what they cook with and how. Not sure, but this is the only way to go..

Re: Restaurant Menu's? - 03/30/2017 01:25 PM

OK, well, I am learning something about allergies here. I think as others have said, menus will do you no good, you need to talk directly to the chef/cook. I don't think, even if the menu is 100% correct, that it is going to say whether they fry in peanut oil or not.

Re: Restaurant Menu's? - 03/30/2017 01:41 PM

I would be very cautious as even places like Buccanneer Beach bar has "chicken satey" on the menu and I'm sure there is cross contamination. Also bring extra epi pens or whatever your child requires. Definitely don't rely on menus but talk to the chef/owner and learn if you don't know already Spanish or French for peanut allergies. Good Luck

Re: Restaurant Menu's? - 03/30/2017 02:54 PM

Epi Pens, Benadryl, etc. I am allergic to all fish and seafood and did great in SXM. Also have contamination issues. Never ate at Johnnie's Under the Tree for example.
Got sick once in Abaco from chicken fried with fish. Hives all over. And twice in Miami. Ended up in ER for IV Steroid. Even so, not paranoid.
Should be fine. Pizza, burgers etc. Salads!
And I too operated restaurants and the best advice is speak to manager or cook when you get there.
Cheers

I've noticed that also. You're probably referring to Le Chanteclair. alacarte does have an FB page - although that isn't necessarily current. The other 20 restaurants have menus that should be helpful to some.

Re: Restaurant Menus? - 03/30/2017 08:03 PM

I have the peanut allergy big time. In 17 trips to SXM, I've never had a problem. We eat mostly in Grand Case and there the wait staff is very attentive to allergy issues. Years ago, before allergies became so common it was difficult at home or abroad. FWIW: Peanut oil used for frying is ok because the allergen does not survive the manufacturing process. This is fortunate because most every gourmet restaurant uses peanut oil for its high smoke temperature.

Dave.....we are too scared to even try peanut oil. We just had a recent peanut component blood test and the allergy is severe to all nuts. My son doesn't even qualify for the peanut challenge.
I'd like to get a heads up by looking at menu's so I know which places to avoid. Trouble is that we are traveling with another family and it would be a major inconvenience to drive to restaurants only to get right back in the car and look for another place. I'd rather know in advance which places are a definite off the list or I can always feed him first and the rest of us can eat which might have to be the plan. Feel bad for my boy though. Good to know about Grand Case.....are the Lolo's safe?
