Trip Insurance?

Trip Insurance? - 09/04/2017 03:43 PM

I know, stupid question here. I've never gotten trip insurance before and know little about it. We have trips planned and booked for Christmas and Spring Break. With the hurricane coming, does trip insurance offer any coverage in case the lodging places are destroyed or too badly damaged for rental usage?

I hate to think in those terms, but depending on what kind of insurance you've purchased, if the planes don't fly or the properties aren't habitable you should have recourse through them, or at least, that's my understanding with what we purchased. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Last night we also began shopping for Trip Insurance for our trip in 52 days. This season has been worrisome.
Eric and Carol have good resources here through sponsors:

In about 10 years we will probably look to add medical evac ins too.

Try TTOL sponsor insuremytrip.com. They'll give you an instant quote and provide all the details on what is covered. We used them twice now, including our upcoming Christmas trip. We also use skymed. It might seem like overkill but we choose a package from insure my trip with limited med coverage and then get awesome med coverage from skymed.

Oh well, InsureMyTrip states that trip insurance coverage isn't payable once a hurricane becomes a named storm - at least, they don't offer any policies for any of their companies in that situation. Makes sense, just hoped there was something somewhere.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but companies do pay for named storms/hurricanes so long as you buy coverage prior them being named.

Insuremytrip has a wonderful section/tutorial about why you would want to purchase trip insurance. It's worth reading. Trip insurance does not cover recoverable expenses. So, if you want to cover your flight and hotel, then it "might" not be worth the expense, since you can usually rebook a flight, even if it is not cancellable. Plus most hotels have a cancellation window. We never got trip insurance until I turned 65, then it became mandatory since Medicare does not cover non-American areas.

On a personal note to Gary V and anyone of interest my Medicare Advantage plan covers me for emergencies worldwide, you may wish to look into these plans as coverage for outside the USA may vary from plan to plan.

Click on this link and enter your zip code to see all of the plans offered in your county.

Here is the language from my policy: "Section II - Benefits
TRIP CANCELLATION AND/OR
INTERRUPTION
The Company will reimburse the Insured a benefit, up to the
Maximum Limit shown in the Schedule or Declarations Page
if an Insured cancels his/her Trip or is unable to continue on his/her Trip due to any of the following Unforeseen events: the Insured’s Primary Residence being made
Uninhabitable or Inaccessible by Natural Disaster,
vandalism or burglary;
(f) the Insured’s Destination being made Uninhabitable or
Inaccessible by flood, tornado, earthquake, volcanic eruption, fire, wildfire or blizzard that is due to natural
causes; a named hurricane causing cancellation or interruption of
travel to the Insured’s Destination that is Inaccessible or
Uninhabitable. Claims are not payable if a hurricane is
foreseeable prior to the Insured’s effective date. A
hurricane is foreseeable on the date it becomes a named
storm. The Company will only pay the benefits for
Losses occurring within 30 days after the named
hurricane makes the Insured’s Destination Uninhabitable
or Inaccessible. Always need to read the FINE PRINT!
