Island 92 says the fire looked to be over the photo shop, left end if your looking at it, and looks to be under control.

I just watched that video and am amazed at the difference in firefighting techniques between US and SXM. Does anyone know anything about their FD? Do they not have more than one engine and one truck company? Looks like they are understaffed and have a lack of equipment or am I too critical because of how US fire departments operate. I would have thought that there would have been another three or four engine companies and one or two more truck companies on scene before that 17 minute video ended.

Anyone know whether the round black stain on the roofing is (a) due to the fire, or (b) due to post-Irma roof repairs, or (c) something else?

Re: FIRE AT THE CARRIEFORE - 06/21/2018 02:22 PM

From my experience that spot on the roof is caused by metal fatigue due to extensive heat

Re: FIRE AT THE CARRIEFORE - 06/21/2018 02:44 PM

It appears that the fire is out based on the fact that I now see on the sxm island cam that the traffic is again flowing in the circle. The building is still standing with damage to the area where the smoke was coming from.

A total of 28 fire officials were on scene to contain the blaze from spreading to the entire building.

That isn't stain, the heat from the fire below it is burning the paint in that area of the roof.

I know what you mean. I was looking for a tall mechanism with lots of water coming out & more vehicles as well. Hope it's contained & not a major setback to the Carrefour. Really nice store! Loved it in January.

Article posted above said it was contained and employees were inside assessing the damage.

A "tall mechanism with lots of water coming out" is generally an indication that the firefighters have gone into defensive mode and have given up on saving the structure. Cutting the roof is standard practice to vent the horizontal heat and flames vertically and then advance a hose line into the building to extinguish the fire. My guess is there was not major damage however because it's a food store, the stock will have to be replaced, hello insurance company, just what they need!

Exactly. And I'm sure there's no power to the building any longer, so everything in the coolers, freezers, etc is going to be spoilage. Produce...gone.Wow....that's
an insurance claim nightmare.

Two claims within a year? Premiums? lol

We drove by on the way to dinner tonight, yellow tape up on the front entrance. And yes, regardless, I have to assume they will have to replace all food except canned stuff..

Looks like you'll be shopping at Market Garden for a while. It's a shame this had to happen to Carefour. Two hits in less than a year and the Cole Bay store out too.

That's even further from us than Carrefour. At this point, we don't need a whole lot so probably will mostly be going to Carrefour in Cupecoy.

Regardless, from what I am hearing, Carrefoure will be closed for around two months. Sad for them, with all they had to do to open after the hurricane. And no, no foul play probably. Suspected electrical problem in the office area.
