Not sure of the circumstances, but if you plan on going in the beautiful water in St. Maarten, make sure of a few things. Watch your alcohol intake. That alone is a big cause of drowning no matter how good a swimmer you are. And if you’re not sure of your swimming capability, stay close to someone who can handle you just in case anything goes wrong. Bring a float and stay near the shore. If you know a certain person is unsure of their swimming, keep an eye on them. Act as a lifeguard. Again, if you’ve been drinking pretty good, stay out of the water and soak up the sun.

Good advice SurferMike even if it wasn't the case in this instance. People don't realize how impaired they may become. I, for one, cannot swim so I make sure i'm not in the water alone nor do I go on boat trips even though I'm sure there's someone on board to help should an accident occur. It only takes a moment.

Good advice, I would add be aware of the dangers of where you are swimming. Rip tides and undertow are common. I myself was caught in one at Cupecoy back in 2005. I was only in chest deep water about 40 yards off the beach. The next thing I knew I was 150 yards offshore. My friends could do nothing. I swam back and forth parallel to the shore slowly making my way in. Took me about half an hour to reach my frantic wife and friends. Ive never been so exhausted. No matter how good a swimmer you are, the sea never tires. Be careful.

Sad. Agree don’t do more than you can handle. Take a cheap swim noodle or two. Could keep your head above water til someone can get you. I’m always amazed how many snorkel excursions skip the snorkel vest and send not so great shaped folks like us into 25’+ water.

Anyway. Too bad.
