Restaurants with a water view in Grand Case Feb 2019 - 02/22/2019 02:01 PM

Carol asked for a list of restaurants on the water side of Grand Case with a view of the water, so this morning, while they were jack hammering concrete in the building next door I did a short walk from the bottom of Grand Case near Rainbow to the Salt Mill by the bridge. Sorry to report not much in the way of dining on the water with a view. You have Rainbow, the boutique hotel with a small dining area on the water Le Temps de Cerises, a few doors up from Rainbow at 160, then you have to go all the way up near the Lolos to find Barranco - which seems pretty upscale. While the shutters were close, it appears that they have a balcony right over the water that is quite large, and I saw tables set there the other day, so I assume the water view portion is open. A few doors further up, near Max's place, ther is a small place called Nice SXM. They definitely have a balcony on the water. From the looks of the raw broken concrete on the walls and ceilings I would think it would be several months before it was open - on the other hand, I saw a chalkboard menu on the balcony, and there were chairs and tables arranged as if they were open. It has one trip advisor review from this month mentioning the view, so I guess it is open.

As to Oceans 82, my wife had thought no work was being done there, and I went by to look, and took a few photos and I would have agreed. Except that I did hear some noises deep within the building, and a few minutes later a man approached as I was taking photos and we talked for a bit. He said he was in charge of the demolition portion of the rebuilding. When I asked how long, he said it would be done in 3 months. I teased him and said I thought that was pretty optimistic, and he agreed, it might take longer.

I will see If I can find a way to upload a few photos and add them to this post.

Barry--thanks so much. Not really what I wanted to hear, but I'm not blaming the messenger. smile What is the menu like at Le Temps de Cerises? Barranco is Italian, and I don't normally eat Italian on SXM. Maybe if I'm really lucky Ocean 82 will be open for our trip in October. Maybe..

Elaine--I mentioned in the other post to Barry that I wanted places open for dinner and apparently Captain Frenchy's is not normally open for dinner, and I think he kind of knew that I wanted more upscale places.

Sorry this didn't work out as well as i had hoped, but if you click on the link, it should come to an Album, and then when you select a photo , on the lower left side I added a label so that you could pair the street photo with the photo of the balcony.

Sorry, the link did not work I will just try it without the link code, so you can highlight and paste it

Capt Frenchy's is only open for lunch, except on Tuesdays for the festival, he opens for dinner. The menu for Cerises is not posted outside except on a video screen that rotates to show photos, then the menu, so I could not capture it. I read the trip advisor reviews, and it was mixed, some loved the service, others hated it. I would say it is more upscale than the Lolos.

I just added the photo from the beach of the dining area at Cerises, it seems pretty small, though the views will be fine if you get near the water.

Oh!! I don't know why I thought Barranco was Italian. duh Because it is where Il Nettuno used to be? Dumb me! Couldn't find a real website or a menu online. The pictures of the décor don't look like it's French food to me. Anyone have a link to a menu?

"hought Barranco was French. Extensive negative (mostly) posts on Jeff Berger's site today."
I read those. Didn't sound to great. Think that owner needs an anger management course.

Lunch or dinner would be better because breakfast when we were there was like breakfast anywhere except for water view of Anguilla.

At lunch they serve smaller portions of similar dinner items as well as sandwiches & salads.

Go around sunset for that beautiful green flash. Even if only for drinks.

We arrive March 10. Too early for check-in and we plan to go to Sunset Cafe for la sturdy lunch so I'll let you know what it was like with the re opening since Irma.

Barranco is in the place where Ramone Losito had Il Nettuno for many years. It has been fully restored and the food is fantastic. It not only looks good, but it also tastes good. As soon as you walk in you can look into the kitchen on the left. The chefs are obviously not some amateur cooks. They look right out of Paris. The atmosphere is very romantic. The shutters are opened to give a view of the water and Anguilla. The sound of the waves sets the mood. This is a "must try" restaurant.

Re: Restaurants with a water view in Grand Case Feb 2019 - 03/01/2019 01:51 AM

Carol, just wanted to fill you in on a few interesting conversations my wife had the last two days we were on the island. She asked two people that worked in Grand Case about its recovery, and both said that the thing they really needed to have some of the nicer restaurants on the beach side of the street with a view to get restored and open. Not too surprising that one of the workers worked in a store that sold jewelry and touristy things, but the other person was a waiter at one of the high end French restaurants on the land side of Grand Case Boulevard. I didn't want to mention the name of the restaurant, because I didn't want anyone to get in trouble, but I found it very interesting to hear that, since I would have thought they would have seen those places across the street as competition. I guess they think that having the nicer beach front restaurants will draw more people to Grand Case, and with more people coming to Grand Case, the restaurants on the land side will see more business as well. Thought you would like to know.

Thanks Barry. I get it, that having the high end restaurants on the water side open is actually good for everyone. I really don't have any clue why there are not more restaurants on the water side open.

Barry some that own land side also own water side. So I imagine they're tired of the red tape and insurance payout delay.

Back in the '80's L'Auberge Gourmand and Taste Vin were owned by same family. In divorce case wife got TasteVin and hubby kept L'Auberge. Now no longer in the family but other's still own several places. I'd name them but at the moment I'm not sure who owns which.

We had a great meal at Barranco in January. Good Service even though they had multiple large parties seated at the same time. Very romantic, excellent food presentation and most importantly taste. Sat on the water, we hope more water side restaurants open before next year, but Barranco is on my list going forward, first class place.

Carol, I read some posts on trip advisor.com and in French someone posted that the beef served there comes from Columbier on the island.

Depends how big those 5 pieces of tuna are compared to the size of the plate. To much dolips of sauces for me but I love tuna.
