Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 03:42 PM

Has anyone here been there? I am surprised that there is almost no talk about it here.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:04 PM

Nope. What's the point of a beach if you can't go in the water? Or a bar that does not allow some of your friends.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:04 PM

Carol,

The few people I know who have actually been there indicate it's nice if you're looking for a high end place to eat, drink see and be seen, and don't want to go into the water and swim as part of your experience. To me, if I'm gonna' spend some serious $$ for a beach experience, I really want to be able to go into the water and this is the ONE beach on the island I've always been warned away from as far as a swimming beach goes.. It's supposed to be on the expensive side but everyone has a different idea of what's expensive.

I know Lesley and Shirley have been there so perhaps they'll chime in.

Elaine,

Are you able to elaborate on the last part of your post? I hope it's not the implication I'm reading into it.

I am fairly certain this is the location on the point where Bamboo Bernie's was. That was the best party on the island back in the day. Of course that was 15 years ago. It was the busiest place around back then and there was of course, no beach, just free drinks for ladies night and lots of fun.

Yes Pat , we do love the atmosphere and food but never for swimming . It's a bit pricey depending on what you order . But very nice for us .

sailbynight--no. This is right beside Royal Palm.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:21 PM

Pat, Lesley and Elaine--I really don't care that you can't (or shouldn't, anyway) go into the water there. Just looking for an upscale experience, which I will pay for, if the experience is good. Is there LOUD music there during the day? I can't stand loud music.
Posted By: ruralcarrier

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:28 PM

Recent reports elsewhere of loud thumping music up to 4:00am on weekends. Not sure if it is from this establishment or one of the smaller places that were supposed to be curtailing the loud music.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:31 PM

4 AM, I certainly wouldn't be there. grin I hope to NOT hear it at Beachside though! shocked

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:33 PM

It does have music but not load and very much in control. Carol you will love the place . Loud music at times is from Buccaneer Beach Bar. This place was bought and built by a Texan Millionaire . His Son is there at times.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:38 PM

If you follow their Facebook page, it looks like they're going for a French Riviera vibe; beautiful people, fancy drinks, etc. It feels (online; I haven't been there) like a nightclub that happens to be on a beach, and happens to also be open during the day. We may stop by one day just to see, but I'm pretty sure we won't be spending a lot of time there. The reports of loud music into the wee hours are disturbing; I remember talented singers (Gianfranco comes to mind) being required to stop at 9 PM at Bucaneer. Seems the owners of Roxxy are being permitted to play by different rules.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:44 PM

OK, thanks. Loud music from Buccanneer?? That's odd. During the day, or at night?
Posted By: BillandElaine

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:46 PM

Buccaneer beach bar has music a couple of nights a week from 6 to 8. And it's not loud at all. Now Captains, Snoopys etc are a different story.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:51 PM

Elaine--thanks, re Buccanneer. I thought that the government said they were going to shut down the loud music in that area at night, but I guess they mis-spoke??

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 04:53 PM

Georgia--I don't think that I fit into the 'beautiful people' category, but we will probably check it out in October..

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 05:16 PM

Hi we went there in June. One evening for drinks and another for dinner. Place is very elegant. Food was fabulous! a little more expensive but worth it. Great DJ the night we went for drinks. Staff was extremely pleasant! Cant wait to go again next year.

Their music schedule has been like this for years and years. A minister lives up the road. They used to be able to play till 9, but probably 5 years ago they pushed it back to 8. Personally, the early schedule was one of the many reasons we had our date night there every week until Irma.

Yes, government has said many things that are not true.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 07:30 PM

I will also check out Roxxy in January but BBB music that ends at 8pm or 9pm shouldn't really be an issue. I've been there and it's music....not ear bleeding music..just music....and enjoyable

Now cranking noise at 11p-1am would definitely be an issue but I can't comment on that because I haven't been there since Roxxy opened

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 07:49 PM

I agree, I've never had a problem with music late at night at BBB, and 8 to 9 o'clock is not late..

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/05/2019 08:44 PM

We were there for dinner in mid July. Very nice, upscale place with a pleasant French ambiance. The food was excellent as was the service.
Prices were in line with other nicer restaurants around the island and they were very accommodating for my girlfriend's vegetarian requests.
We went there around 7:00 pm, walked right in and got a table. No loud music while we were there.
We liked it so much we went back for our last dinner on the island.
I don't know what the vibe is during the daytime hours, but I would recommend giving it a try for dinner, or at least stopping in for a drink at the bar...

Agreed.

One of the new chefs from France (invired us in January to show up sometime after they opened.

It seems they have granD plans. Let’s see what they can do.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 11:41 AM

It seems some people are not welcome. Not sure what the criteria is or who makes the decision but people, including friends, have not been allowed entrance.

That was my point, Carol, that the music wasn't loud, but that they were required to stop playing early. I thought it was 9 PM, but Elaine says it's 8.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 01:10 PM

I think Lesley was mistaken about that.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 01:33 PM

Hello Carol, during the day their is very low music at Buccaneer, however during the evening there is music and goes on till they are closed and not 8 nor 9 pm.

OK.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 02:08 PM

While I have not eaten at Roxy, I have been next to it numerous times. I did not care for the "techno" music they played during the daytime and it got old quickly. I guess it got old because I'm old duh.
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 02:42 PM

OK, I guess I'd better go and have a drink to check it out, before I plan on eating a meal there. I don't care for 'techno' music either.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 02:52 PM

Yes the music sucks , because it's not our type, but food , service and atmosphere is very nice and cool. Also we know quite a few of the workers there plus the Manager and Supervisor.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 06:21 PM

Elaine, are people turned away at the door because they are dressed inappropriately or for other reasons? If denied access to a business, they must be told the reason. Sometimes if patrons are denied access it is because they have had too much to drink. Sorry to hear they are doing this without explanation.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 06:24 PM

As I said, I don't know their criteria. My friends were not drunk.
Posted By: Carol_Hill

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 07:01 PM

Elizabeth--actually, not. Especially in SXM, any business can deny service to anyone they want. And they don't have to give a reason or even HAVE a reason. I know nothing about this particular situation, but it's not in their best financial interest to deny someone service, so I figure they had a good reason for doing so.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 07:18 PM

A few years ago in the same location that Roxxy Beach is at, there was a small beach hut bar that had live bands. One was a reggae band with up to 6 musicians ( they were fantastic) and the other, a rock band featuring Craig ( or Bob) Chairman from packlight. Dancing and having a drink under the stars with your feet in the sand. What is better than that for a fun evening! That is what St Maarten is all about. You can keep techno music. Give me live music with talented musicians!

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/06/2019 07:21 PM

Yeah, I probably will go check it out and have a drink, but that music isn't appealing to me either.
Posted By: islandgem

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/07/2019 02:37 AM

Thanks Elaine. It seems they have no rules for businesses there so they can pick and choose as they want. We will have to see in November if they let us in or not. dine

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/07/2019 12:25 PM

I'm not sure I have any interest in going there, knowing that they will pick and choose who they allow in. Too many places that appreciate our business and welcome us with open arms to wonder whether or not we'll be allowed to spend our money there.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/07/2019 01:20 PM

Pat,
Why are you saying:

"I really want to be able to go into the water and this is the ONE beach on the island I've always been warned away from as far as a swimming beach goes".

Seems like a cruise ships are bringing lots of people to Kim Sha Beach.
Posted By: GaKaye

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/07/2019 01:41 PM

Not Pat, but it's been documented that raw sewage is discharged into that water.
Posted By: pat

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/07/2019 02:10 PM

cmh,

Georgia is correct - raw sewage and ground run off is a major issue in this area and has been for years.

We started coming to SXM in 1973 and have continued to do so annually through the present. Kimsha is the ONLY beach we’ve ever been cautioned about with reference to not swimming there because of these specific problems, and while I know there are many who do, based on the warnings we’ve received from locals as early as 1983, it’s the one island beach where I absolutely will NOT swim.

Re: Roxxy Beach - 08/15/2019 11:56 AM

When my husband and I first started coming to SXM back in 2011, we enjoyed the island music and the margaritaville vibe, but then we started traveling to SouthFlorida, i.e. South Beach, Haulover Beach (nude beach), and have started to prefer a more upscale vibe for restaurants, as far as ambiance - and techno sort of "goes with the territory." Granted, this isn't Miami, but it's nice that there is something for everyone on SXM.

I'm the kind of guy who likes all kinds of music, I guess. Will definitely try Roxxy, and also looking forward to JAX Steakhouse. (JAX looks way more upscale than the usual fare in Maho village.)
