How I met my SXM travel mate

How I met my SXM travel mate - 08/30/2019 03:17 PM

I had recently broken up and was disappointed about not finding true love.
On my lunch hour from work saw an add and decided to visit a tarot card reader to check for answers 😂.
Got there early, heard the reader I had spoken to on the phone laughing.
She had a male customer with a real hott voice.
That was the first day I saw my husband as he was leaving. Felt fireworks 🤣 how handsome.
Following week I went to visit her again, saw him again, he asked me out.
Crazy but true.

I decided to share this story today as I'm having a bad day my dad is so sick.
With the storm heading to Florida, I hope not- I thought we could all share some crazy or funny stories about our travel partner or a crazy day on the island.

Great story Tammy.

My hubby called me 19 times before I agreed to go out with him. We were a blind date. When we decided to marry he went to a travel agent and without consulting me booked a trip to SXM for our honeymoon I thought our relationship would end because he hadn't thought to ask what I might want and that vein might continue once we married.

I am not a sun or water person and the thought of just lying on a beach suggested boredom. Well, there was a "dig" on the island and I joined to help out. Forty years later we're still married and every year return to SXM.

A tarot card reader? How interesting. If you would have visited Lily Dale (near where I live) in western New York who knows how things might have turned out! But, in the end we all wind up on St. Maarten so that's a great ending.

Hi Ron
Blind date that's exciting. You were hard to get I was easy 🤣.
All's well that ends well.

Our first trip was a surprise for me also for our anniversary (2).
Over the years we've often said the best money we've spent has been on our SXM trips.
Better than houses, cars, horses, jewelry.
Our priceless SXM memories.

Sure right Sammy
Who's knows
One magic moment in time
Can take us down one road or another.

But we all share the same love SXM ❤️

Once, a long time ago a college freshman asked me if I would give her a ride home.
I did and a few years later we were married.
I won a trip to Sint Maarten from Xerox, where I spent most of my working life.
We returned to SXM every year (except Irma interruption) for more than 35 years.
Today, 08/30/2019, we celebrated our 50th year wedding anniversary.
Tickets bought for SXM Dec/Jan 2019/2020.

I visited a friend at college, met MJ on our way to a frat party, hit it off pretty well. Met back up one week later, engaged one month and one day from the day we met, married six months later. Our 35th is in under a month. Secret to lots of years, always have a vacation on the calendar to look forward to.
Cheers,

I was a senior in college and had just called it quits with my girlfriend when my dad asked if I wanted to go on a date with this nice girl whose mother worked with him. She too had just broken up with her boyfriend. She happened to live a block from where I was living. Picked her up on my Honda cycle and after getting soaked in a storm, took her home. A few months later we were married. That was 52 years ago this past June. We made our first trip to SXM in 2000 after I had retired and have been back most every year since, sometimes a couple of times a year. We have made so many friends on the island and can't wait until May for another month on the island. Happy 50th to you and your wife, Tom. We live only a few miles from you in Lancaster.

My wife and I met when she was 9 and I was 11 at summer camp. I shared the comics with her. We didn’t date until she turned 16 ( our ‘dating was writing letters as she was an hour away ). She broke up with me since she was going to college. Later we started dating again and 45 years ago we got married. We planned on going to the Caribbean for our 25th but had to wait until past our 30th because of circumstances. We now have gone 9 times and plan on more.

Eric and I met in college, sort of! smile His brother was going to college at the same school I was, in Indiana. His brother was dating a girl who lived in the dorm room next to mine. Eric drove out from Virginia to pick up his brother in the spring of our sophomore year. We met then and dated throughout college and my first two years of law school, although we never lived in the same state until we got married. We kept in touch mostly by good old pen and ink letters, although he did call me fairly often, often spending $200 a month (in 1978!!!!) on phone bills, way back before cell phones. We got married in 1979 and went to Aruba, staying at Manchebo Beach Resort for our honeymoon. We celebrated our 40th anniversary this June.

Re: How I met my SXM travel mate - 09/01/2019 01:36 PM

I met my best friend when I was about fifteen years old and in high school, not as a Boy Friend - but merely as a friend. Such a good friend, in fact, that I kept setting him up with some of my girlfriends since I had a steady bf at the time but who had graduated from hs the year before and was in the military.

Needless to say, lots of things a girl would like a date for in her h s senior year and John became my go-to senior date guy and we, all three, were okay with that. As J’s and my friendship grew and we all grew up and started to realize some of our life plans and goals were changing, the relationships changed, too. John and I first met in 1962, became engaged in 1965 and have been married since 1966 - definitely the best decision I ever made in my life.

Love! Passion! Romance! They’re all wonderful attributes and necessary to a relationship but that Friends part - to me, anyway, is the thing that will carry you through all kinds of trials. Well, that along with him learning that magical and all important phrase - “Yes, Dear......” very early on ..... smile smile.

Soon come 53 years and if the good Lord’s willing, many more to follow. Such a lucky woman am I.

How true Pat about being friends. We've found that to be an important part of our relationship and I swear that's why we endure. But maybe it's the yearly trip to SXM that keeps the glue in place? lol Friendship, respect, tolerance, and knowing a marriage is MORE that 50/50. It's 100% from both parties 100% of the time.

All you suggested and let me make one more addition - you really need to talk to each other and communicate. A wise man(who had two or three divorces along the way....) also suggested never go to bed angry. All the above and then whatever else makes you happy. Those SXM trips will help, too..... clapping clapping

Thirty-three years ago, on Valentine's Day, I went to a club that a friend had suggested I try. She introduced me to this guy who was a few years younger than I, and he had braces on his teeth. He taught me how to cha-cha, and the rest is history. I'm his third wife, and we've been married for 32 years this coming February. He doesn't love the beach as much as I do, but he's a very smart man wink

Reading these stories gives me happy tears.

I believe laughter is important in a marriage.
We make each other laugh a lot.

In October we will hit fifteen years.

I also think that our trips to SXM have helped.
Ever so often we get to head to fantasy land and always leave renewed.

1970.. met my husband in a grave yard on Halloween .. we were a bunch of kids (15 years old) just crossing through the grave yard to get to someone's house when these older boys were also crossing through.. started a conversation with my husband who seemed very cool and 4 years older than me.. after that night we kept running into one another and before you know it we were dating . He was off to boot camp shortly after and we wrote back and forth he was on the west coast me east coast. We dated for 7 years before getting married in 1977 .. We have two wonderful children 2 grandchildren and have been through the toughest times, cancer, heart surgery, care of elderly dying parents , a truck accident where he was crushed from the chest down and years of surgeries and rehabs .. We have had the best of times .. Our healthy children and grandchildren.. our kids are successful, giving, caring and kind ..we are so happy, we are best friends and feel blessed.. been going to SXM since our 25th wedding anniversary in 2002 .. this year we are going back and celebrating 42 years... The stories above are great .. thanks for making my day

PattyM,

All of these stories have been heart-warming but yours has brought tears to my eyes both of laughter and of joy. We've traveled similar paths (minus the cemetery of course.....) it would seem but in the end, when you can wake up each morning and know your family and friends are well, your children are good people and your mate is by your side and you still like him as much and/or more than you did all those earlier years ago, I think you are a truly fortunate person. I know my glass runs over in all those areas.

And Tom and Lisa,

Congrats to you both - we were feted for our 50th by our kids a few years ago, too, and it was wonderful to be able to share our happiness and good fortune with so many friends and family.

And sincere congratulations to all who have shared their stories here.

I've been married to my SXM partner for 50 years. I drove to the college campus where she was a freshman during the first week of school. I knew her name, but had never met her. Her older sister is who gave me her name. I went to the only dorm on campus that I knew, and she was in fact there and came downstairs (after the front desk called her) and that is how we first met. Our first visit to SXM was in 1987. I had my 60th birthday bash on the island with 8 other couples.

My late wife and I met this way, and had 12 trips to St. Martin...
I had just passed the Bar and began private practice. My dear parents suggested, and I agreed, to move out
and get an apartment. The apartment had no curtains, so I went to McAlpins Department Store in Middletown
to get curtains. A 19 year old girl with dark hair waited on me. We learned in our discussion that we had a
common friend. That common friend sparked a romance that lasted 44 years, as we married six months after
that first meeting. It was "curtains" for me ! Roslyn loved the Divi Resort and our resort friends Walter, Marisol and Geraldine.

I met my wife while on a Nile River cruise 10 years ago. There were a lot of things that made me interested in her. Finding out that she had been to Orient Beach was certainly one of them. Keeping me from hitting the marble floor when I passed out in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo was another positive. Since then we have stayed a Club O a number of times as well as stayed with her friends in Marigot.
