Considering a Canadian man was killed in Maho, I certainly haven't considered it "safe" since then. frown

Of course, you also will probably not find me out at 3am.

I'm not sure any place is safe in the Caribbean at 3:10 a.m. in the morning. What were they doing out at that time? I'm not sure when I was in college during spring break I was out and about at 3:10 a.m. in Ft. Lauderdale (though I probably was). This is exactly what I mean by being smart when on St. Martin. Staying out of potential situations where crime becomes an opportunity requires "island smarts" that need to used to prevent such occurrences. Hope this guys is going to be okay for his bravery.

aside from that cou[le's stupid of being out at that time, it was good to hear someone tried to come to the rescue not even considering he could get injured. Unless I missed it the article didn't say if the man shot was another tourist or a local.

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/11/2020 12:55 PM

the first thing I question about the article is.. How many bars are open in Maho at 3 AM?

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/11/2020 03:25 PM

Maybe it was an 'after hours' club. The place where you go when the bars close down at 2:00 a.m. Does St. Maarten have any of those places?

What about the men's club behind the pharmacy? Can't remember the name at the moment.

I think it is like the platinum Club.

I think those comments of "what were they doing out at that time" are quite rude. It's their business. I certainly would not be but they are on vacation so they should have fun. So sorry to hear this. And hope the guy that helped is okay.

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/11/2020 08:01 PM

I disagree. These comments are not intended to be rude at all in my opinion. How many people are out and running around at 3:00 a.m. in the morning? Just trying to say that bad things are far more likely to happen in the dead of the night when very few people are around rather during day time hours. Would you walk the boardwalk in Philipsburg at 3:00 a.m. alone or as a couple? To me, this story would be far worse (it's bad enough) if this attempted robbery and shooting happened at 3:00 p.m. Unfortunately, the 'creatures of the night' come out under the cover of darkness so discussing this provides sound advice for both tourists and the residents of St. Maarten.

Isn't that Golden Eyes? Never been inside but recall seeing that on a billboard.

No, I think it is Platinum Club as Golden Eyes is/was located in Simpson Bay above where Ric's Place used to be.

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/11/2020 08:54 PM

Yes. Your right. Now I remember that it is the Platinum Club behind that pharmacy. Now I recall Golden Eyes was still above old Ricks Place as of last May. Thanks.

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/11/2020 09:00 PM

Well, if my flight is changed due to weather to a day earlier the option to spend the night at a club if I can't get a room, has just vanished LOL.

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/11/2020 09:28 PM

Hope this man is doing okay, but in retrospect his bravery could have cost him his life. A few weeks ago a Wendy;s restaurant about 15 miles from where we live was robbed in broad daylight by some scumbag. A male worker at the Wendy's confronted the robber and tried to disarm him but was fatally shot in the abdomen. He died that evening at a local hospital. So senseless. Standing up to an armed robber seems quite valiant, but nothing the crook could take is worth risking your life over. The good news is that they caught this guy and although he won't get what he's really got coming, he will be looking at roughly 40 years for second degree murder.

Was the shooting inside the Platinum Club or outside the Platinum Club

Who said it was the Platinum Club? I didn't.

Many armed robberies are happening in broad daylight. Have you not read this in the papers?
Posted By: SammyM

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/12/2020 04:43 AM

Yes, I read the papers every single day without fail. The only point I'm trying to make here is that at 3:00 a.m. only the less desirables will likely be lurking in the shadows out there. Yes, crime will happen during the day as i has in the past but I'll take my chances in day light rather than at that time of night. Yes, these people are on vacation and if they want to stay up all night that's strictly their business, but my belief remains that there are many areas of St. Martin that are extremely risky at night and should be avoided. I didn't think Maho would be a trouble-prone area, but it appears that it may be.

When my wife and I first visited St. Martin many years ago we met a nice couple from California at the bar at Kakao one afternoon and they even bought us a round of drinks. I asked the man "how's crime on island?" in the context of general conversation, and he said "well, it's like anywhere else in the Caribbean. You just have to be smart and not make poor choices, just like in the larger cities in the U.S." This is just my opinion, and I'm not trying to pass judgement on any one, but being out at 3:00 a.m. in the evening on SXM is a poor choice in my book. We must bear in mind that a person suffered a gunshot wound because of this.

Times have changed... Years ago my mother and her boyfriend would be in the Maho area till the casino closed and we were at Sams Pub in Philipsburg till it closed. Now I am back by sunset and dine locally.

Office space quote

Re: Man shot preventing robbery - 02/12/2020 04:10 PM

Great Office Space quote, and well placed, Pirate!

"What the [...] is a PC Load Letter?!?"

though a more apropos quote (considering the island forum) would be:

"Lo siento? If it happens again, I won't be leaving a tip, 'cause I could... I could shut this place down, sir? I could take my traveler's checks to a competing resort... I could write a letter to your Board of Tourism and I could have this place condemned. I could... I could put strychnine in the guacamole. There was salt on the glass, big grains of salt."
