travel insurance and covid-19 - 07/20/2020 11:01 PM

I have Allianz Travel Protection Plan.

They state that they will : 1.cover emergency medical care for a customer who becomes ill with covid-19 while on trip.
2.if customer becomes ill with covid-19 either before or during trip they cover trip cancellation or interruption

OK, I think that is very definitely a big change for them. But will they cover emergency evac??

Is that the company you can get through AA as an add on?

Yes, it is.

Thanks. Good to know. Think I'll add it to my flight arriving in May. Even though it is purchased with AA miles good to have in case I become ill while there.

We, too have used them for a number of years. Only needed coverage 1 time and they were great but peace of mind always made it a good value.

Yes, that is a change. We have several tickets, and when we purchased them, at that time, they did not cover COVID evac. We will have to re-look at insurance, if it is now available.

Evac is different than pay for medical care.

Again--RonDon--what does the policy say about medical evac?? Coverage for medical evac for Covid 19 is a HUGE deal..

I've found the medical evacuation question a bit harder to answer for companies I have been using for travel insurance. But, it is clearly answered for Travelex at https://www.travelexinsurance.com/covid19.

"An insured is also eligible for Emergency Medical/Evacuation coverage if the insured contracts the coronavirus while traveling."

At least for that policy, they are paying cancellation coverage if you get Covid-19 and are quarantined. It will not cover if unless you actually get the disease, though, even if there are travel restrictions in place.

Why can't other insurance companies have a page this clear?

"....if the insured CONTRACTS the coronavirus while traveling..."

What happens if someone tests positive upon arrival? Is that the same as "while traveling"???

I would say no since it's not an instantaneous infection ...

Edit: I should add that if you BECAME positive during a stay on Island then MAYBE

Re: travel insurance and covid-19 - 07/21/2020 10:38 PM

Agreed, but it would mean a reason to weasel out of payment.

The policy purchased with airfare says nothing about it. I do have another policy (expensive) that covers it.

OK, to be clear, you're talking about the separate policy you have, which covers Covid evac, and NOT the Allianz.? I don't see anything in JD's link that talks about medical evac at all.
