Passport renewal, I’m starting to panic

Passport renewal, I’m starting to panic - 09/13/2022 03:39 PM

I sent my passport in to be renewed on Sept 3 and it was received by the passport authority on Sept 6. Has anyone renewed their passport recently, if so what was the turn around time?
Thanks!

SXMMD--Have not renewed recently myself, but some are reporting fairly quick turnarounds. When do you need it by?

Hi Carol, We hope to touch down in SXM on 27 September. We are in Maryland very near DC so worse case scenario we an make an appointment to pick it up at the passport office. Hope we didn’t wait too long.

Yikes. At the very least, you should have expedited it. Best wishes.

I started my renewal back in early April, just before the summer rush. Their website acknowledged receipt of my application on April 11 (even though USPS tracking showed they actually received it April 4). I received new passport June 9. So almost 9 weeks. Did not pay for any expedited services.

BUT, about 4-5 weeks after they received my application, I received a letter claiming my application couldn't be processed because "electronic signatures" were not acceptable...i was really surprised they noticed a scan of my actual signature was added to the application using Acrobat Pro...to the naked eye, the signature on the printed app looked legit, and i've signed many other documents using this procedure without issues....anyway, i had to print out the app again (app had been filled out using Acrobat) but actually sign with pen, and submit in special envelope to a special address....so this most likely added 1-2 weeks to my experience

so beware using electronic signatures thinks

Below is a link to a great tool on the State Department website that will show you the status of your passport renewal. It also has an area where you can put in your email address and you will receive updates as your renewal moves through the process.

Using Fedex Kinko's "Rush My Passport" service which I will never do again, it took us about 5 weeks. I felt that they were a complete waste of extra money, nothing felt express about it.
Good luck but I wouldn't bet on your success.

We sent in our passport renewal on June 27, 2022 via overnight delivery, and paid for expedited passport service.
We received our new passports on July 30, 2022.
So it took about 1 month for us.
Good luck.

I'm not sure if it's feasible, since your passport renewal is already in the pipeline, but there is an even more expedited service, in person, if you are traveling in less than 14 days. You might call the number listed in the graphic below and find out if you can make an appointment and show up in person. Hope the information helps. Taken right from State website.

We used one of the commercial expediters in April for a family member and had it back in 2 weeks. I was certainly surprised it came back so quickly. Hopefully yours does too!

My husband passport was about to expire. We had to make an appointment in Vermont at the Passport Office !!! WE LIVE IN NJ !!! we took the trip, all our paperwork was done, we printed the Itinerary, (as proof of paid tickets) AND YOU WILL NEED THAT ! they were very nice, told us to comeback in a couple of hours, we had lunch all went well, passport in hand... in another case, our friend had to do the same for a Trip to Italy, he went to Vermont, did everything we did, came back after a couple of hours, and his application was DENIED !!!! It was a very old IRS inquiry that was never cleared. He immediately got on the phone with the IRS, took care of the inquiry, all was cleared in their system... BUT IT TAKES 24 TO 48 HOURS FOR THE SYSTEM TO UPDATE !! NEEDLESS to say he did not go to Italy with his wife for their anniversary... But she went ! lol

Greetings:
At this late date, my advice is that you contact the district office of your member of Congress. You mentioned that you live in the Suburban MD area....Whether its Raskin, Trone or whoever, they have constituent service staff whose job it is to attempt to unjam the log jam at the passport office. If you choose this route, make sure to complete and return the signed authorization to use and disclose your personal information. The Privacy Act requires them to have this authorization in hand in order to inquire on your behalf.
Good luck!

Thank you! I did call Tuesday morning, exactly 2 weeks before our trip. The gentleman said if we haven’t received it by Monday to call for an appointment at which time we will go to the DC office to pick it up.

They received my application on August 25th, expedited, received new passport yesterday, Sept 17th, so 3 weeks and 2 days, they were estimating 4 - 6 weeks.

It may help to pay for expedited service if you are in a hurry, but I mailed my renewal (not expedited) on 8/22 and received my new passport yesterday, 9/24. Pretty good service.
