Charleston

Hi there Planning a trip to Charleston,SC...wondering about decent public golf courses and good restaurants...not gourmet but good food reasonable priced. Thanks in advance!

I cannot recommend any golf courses, but in the way of food that is pretty easy. I am not if there is a bad restaurant in Charleston. A friend who lived there for a long time recommended the Fat Hen, which is outside Charleston and it was VERY good, and reasonable. We went there for Sunday Brunch.

I wish we would have gone to Husk. The menu is always changing and it is because they truly only use what is fresh. Everyone I have ever talked to that has eaten there said it was amazing. Real Southern cooking, albeit it may be a little more than you would like to spend by your post. Husk Menu The prices are not outrageous and anything but fine dining. It is Southern Charm! Recommend a reservation.



Charleston is also known for their rooftop bars. Great place for a light dinner with a view. That would be one other thing, I would definitely add to your agenda.

Their prices aren't too bad especially if the food is excellent I don't mind paying a little more.

+1 for Husk. Had a great dinner in Charleston and they opened a second location in Nashville that is equally as good. I saw on Tom's menu link some of the local items crossover. We had a good experience at Hymans. We didn't do the dining room just the bar and the oysters, peel and eat shrimp and Bloody Mary's are all good, I know Tom wasn't over whelmed with his experience there. One night we hit about 5 places and just did apps, desserts and a wine in their bars. That was my favorite because we got to try all different places. Great walking town and you can catch a rickshaw if you need a lift.

For good seafood at a reasonable price there are several restaurants across the bridge at Shem Creek in Mt Pleasant. RB's Seafood is our favorite.

If you are going to Charleston for any length of time, you must play The Ocean Course on Kiawah. It has a habit of humbling one's self.

For a good breakfast, I venture out to Isle of Palms to Acme Low Country kitchen. Love their biscuits.

We were in Charleston for a meeting in October. Luckily we arrived early to enjoy a few days of being tourist before heading to Wild Dunes for our meeting (sick golf course BTW). Unfortunately upon our arrival and check in to Wild Dunes, the governor ordered the evacuation due to Matthew. While many members rushed to get flights out that night or next day, we chilled and waited till Thursday to fly out (by then the airlines were in "emergency mode" and we could change our flights with no fees). So with that we made our way back to downtown Charleston where the city that was bustling a few days ago was rolling up the streets and boarding the windows. We spent the entire day eating and drinking our way across town with the few establishments that were still open. We had dinner at Hall's Chophouse and it was AMAZING (just be ready with a big appetite and a bigger wallet). Bobby Hall is in the front of the house introducing himself to each patron that comes in and does his rounds through the tables to make sure everything is up to his very high standards (we loved it).
We met up with some friends that live down there and they took us to a nice little secret place called RAW. It has become much less of a secret, but the seafood is amazing!
We had stayed earlier in the week at The Francis Marion Hotel which is an old gem so the rooms can be small, but a lovely hotel. The restuarant downstiars, the Swamp Fox, is known to have the best shrimp and grits around. I go to Charleston often. There are great , reasonable golf courses just North of the Ravenel Bridge: Carolina National, Patriots Point, and Dunes West. Kiawah is pricey, but there are a couple of courses near there that won't break the bank. Restaurants: Blossoms, Amen St., SNOB, All restaurants are pricey, but these are reasonable. Charleston is all about the food. Enjoy! And please take a buggy ride.

Charleston is a famous city in the South Carolina. Carolina is the greatest city in the world. It is also awarded as the world’s best destination for Travel & Leisure in 2013. Charleston is known for its historic charm.

Any recos for a hotel in the downtown historic area?

I stay at the Vendue -- a boutique hotel with original artwork throughout. It has one of the few rooftop bars on the peninsula, and hotel guests have priority access to the bar (which can mean a lot during popular times). It's steps away from Bay Street, and walking distance to the Battery, restaurants, shopping, etc.

Stayed at the Marriott Courtyard Historic District a couple of years ago and it was perfect. Location, price and room were all good.
