Safari in Kenya and Tanzania

Safari in Kenya and Tanzania - 03/12/2007 01:13 PM

My Girlfriend and I are going to Kenya and Tanzania in the beginning of May. We are looking for the best places to go on a safari. So far we have seen Ngorongoro and the eastern part of Serengeti as the most interesting places to go at that time. But we would like to get some travellers advice of going. Maybe you would suggest us to go somewhere else, or you might give us some usefull information about the places.
We are looking forward to hear from you.

I don't actually have any specific suggestions for you, but I am surprised that you say that you are going the beginning of May. You are talking about this year?? When we booked for Botswana, we had to book well over a year in advance to get the camps that we wanted..

BTW, do you have a trip report or link to pictures from your previous trip?? Would love to see them!

Hei Carol!

I talk about may this year. We are backpacking and a part of our trip goes to Lusaka, Zambia, where we will visit some of our friends. We have already booket flights to Nairobi arr. 1st. of May and going home from Lusaka 1st. of june.

We have are weblog, where we post pictures from our stay in Norway, where we are staying from December 06 to late April 07. Unfortunately it is in Danish, so i suppose that it will be a bit hard to understand the text. But pictures are international:-)

More news from the "Dark continent" and a heads up for you all.

Just remember everyone the bad element knows where to find you and they usually have very little to lose themselves.

While no doubt isolated incidents knowledge is your friend.

Tanzania: Tourists Shot by Bandits

By Larry Habegger March 28th, 2007

Two American tourists and their guide were shot by bandits at Tengeru in the Arusha region March 20, an area that saw a similar incident on February 20 when four Czech Republic nationals and a visitor from Hong Kong were robbed but uninjured. The bandits are believed to have come from Somalia and Tanzanian troops are searching the forests for them. In the late 1990s the same area suffered similar incidents of armed robbery by Somali bandits. The injured Americans were taken to Nairobi for treatment and the guide remained hospitalized in Tanzania.

One of the reasons why we chose Botswana for our safari was the relative security of that country.. It's a shame that has to be a consideration.

I don't remember whether Edward posted a trip report or not, but we posted an extensive several part trip report which is in the trip report archives in 2005. Please let me know if you can't find it.

I went to Tanzania in 2004 with Thomson Safaris. Tarangire is a favorite for elephants in particular. While off the beaten path, the Rift Valley up through Lake natron is quite different. Lots of great topography and unusual birdlife. We did a hike through Masai villages with our gear on donkeys through Thomson. It is easily one of the most memorable trips I've ever done. I definitely felt as though I had left the world I know and entered something totally different. i'm convinced we were in areas so remote that wee might not have heard about 9/11 for a few days had we been there at that time.

Was in Tanzania in 2003. Spent several days in Stonetown (Zanzibar) and thought it was wonderful. Also spent a couple of nights on Chumbe Island. It's an eco-resort with open huts overlooking the Indian Ocean. Actually considering returning to both for a honeymoon.

Hi Carol,

Just saw this. I posted an abbreviated trip report here a while ago.

I'll download some of my photos (there are almost 900) to photobucket in the coming days and will send you the link.
